The spring had enough tension to hold the elevator straight with the horizontal with the airplane at rest. He tried this because the elevator is not aerodynamically balanced. I believe that I heard from Vi Kapler that the experiment works. I do not know how many Piets today have this installation. I have installed a spring-type trim system in my Piet, similar to the designthe Mike Cuy developed. It appears to work well in my basement, butobviously has not been flight tested. Mike has been flying his for severalyears now. I can't imagine not having a trim system in any airplane. Ifanyone wants to see pictures of my installation, let me know and I wille-mail them privately (not on the list)Jack Phillips-----Original Message-----

It was a way to prevent the weight of the elevator from to fall slightly down in flight due to gravity.
