There's no silver (or other UV block) on the bottom side of the fabric.Anything that gets through to the lowermost strands of fabric will exit thetest sample and get counted.Gene-----Original Message-----

I would also like to see a test of the clear varnish that is supposed to byUV blocking. We tried some plain varnish on fabric out at the Smithsonian acouple of years ago, both on cotton and synthetic to see if the look anddurability was right, never could keep the test pieces outside long anoughto get a good gouge on the durability.----- Original Message -----

Corky, very few wooden winged aircraft had covering around the leading edgefrom the bottom of the spar to the top. Most only covered the top half, down to the leading edge. (obviously, except for aircraft where the leadingedge is a box structure, like a Cessna Airmaster or something) Covering thewhole thing only asks to trap water. Think of it, the wright brothersdidn't even cover the bottom of the wing.Gene----- Original Message -----

I think I know the airplane you are talking about, but I am not sure it isvarnished, it might just be clear dope. I don't know any brands, just anyone that claims to be UV blocking. I'll take a look to see if I can findone. I am just curious what percentage of UV it does block. One thing we found out with our experiments is that the varnish needs sometinting, yellowlike, to make it look right. Also, the varnish does nottighten cotton, so we tried one coat of dope first, then varnish. Thiswould not be a problem on dacron, though.----- Original Message -----

Mike Brusilow,I believe you know some of the folks at Rhinebeck Aerodrome. What do theydo for covering some of their ships that appear to be varnish on fabric?Chris bobka-----Original Message-----

Mike probably knows better, but I think they are all dope on fabric. Ican't think of which ones are clear-doped only, most are colored.----- Original Message -----
