Pietenpol-List: Rudder Pedals

Gene,It would seem as if the "hanging" pedals would solve the problem ofthe pedals flopping over flat on the floor as floor mounted pedalswould do when your feet came off them, assuming no spring or cablereturn device were used. After looking at the amount of room available to me (at 5' 6") and JohnLangston (at near 6') there was not much if any room to install a returnspring or cable interconnect. In other words, in our case, a full rudderpedal deflection put the pedal, and the foot on it, up against the firewall. So we decided to go with the rudder bar system as it was simple enoughto use. A hanging pedal design would work just fine but John didn'tmention it as an option and I was not aware of that style of pedals.I guess it goes back to the fact that our drawings showed the rudder barsand the fact that we wanted to use the Ford Model A engine to power it.Sort of keeping it in the style of things 70 years ago. It's not a big deal, just examine the various ways, choose and go with it.Best wishes,RodgerPiet in progress________________________________________________________________________________

Subject: Pietenpol-List: Rudder PedalsI am in the process of installing the rudder pedal in the front cockpit. On the plans they are tilted towards the back of the plane(if you aresitting in the front seat the tops are tilted towards you when the rudderis centered). I was testing them out before I drilled the holes and theyseemed to be awkward to use. Has anyone on the list used the front seatruder pedals while flying and do you have an opinion on the way they feelwhen flying? I think they would be better if they were vertical or slantedaway from you. Does this make any sense it's still early out here inCalifornia and I was up late building.Corky what does your Test Pilot think of them?Chris Sacramento, CAThe best thing to hit the internet in years - Juno SpeedBand!Surf the web up to FIVE TIMES FASTER!________________________________________________________________________________Date: Fri, 6 Jun 2003 20:01:09 GMTSubject: RE: Pietenpol-List: Rudder Pedals

If you slanted them away, or even vertical, you would have to move themback substantially from the firewall or they would hit the firewall beforeyou got to full rudder travel. I kind of like the original plans whichshow the pedals hanging down from the cross brace at the top of thefirewall. I have asked numerous people, though, and cannot get an answerwhy Bernie moved away from this system, pluses or minuses. I am just nowtrying to figure out how I am going to mount my front pedals. If you comeup with any good ideas, I'd like to hear.GeneOriginal Message:-----------------

It does not bolt to the firewall, but to the oak cross member, much morestrength than the 1/4" ply floor, so that cannot be the reason.Gene----- Original Message -----

Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: Rudder PedalsGene,May I make a small statement on the subject of rudder pedals. Place the rudder bar forward for the front pilot. Put your pedals with Cessna style brake cyl for rear pilot. Connect the two with 3/8 4130 tubing and connect the rudder horn to the pedals with cable. Taut fit without return springs. This is the fab I'm using for Repiet.Corky________________________________________________________________________________

On Mine (long fuselage version) I installed the front rudder pedals suchthat they bottom out on the firewall at full rudder deflection, saving mefrom having to add a stop. I used 5/16" tubing to connect them to therudder bar so no return springs are needed and at neutral rudder the frontrudder pedals are just about perpendicular to the floorboard. Feels fine inmy basement. We'll see how it does in the air this fall.Jack -----Original Message-----

A couple of questions on the pedals. The plans call for them to be mounted2 =BD inches from the firewall. Is that enough distance? I=92m planning toplace a washer between the pedal and the bracket. Should it be metal, fiber, plastic, etc?Thanks,JackDSM________________________________________________________________________________

There are still a WHOLE BUNCH of metal pieces to make even after you've paid Mr.Kappler for the hinges. Use the guy for mentorship/training on the other pieces, Tom. Looks like a greatresource.Kevin--------Kevin "Axel" PurteeNX899KPAustin/Georgetown, TXRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: Rudder Pedals
