Is there a Piet-list problem?...Or more likely I've been dumped for non-contribution ;-)________________________________________________________________________________

Years ago I was looking into using a VW engine in a different application. Idecided to pass.I too had concerns with the thrust going through the crankshaft to the farend .Not just that but the thrust forces have to make 90 degree turns thtougheach rod throw tooI talked to the Great Planes folks that sell converted VW engines foraircraft and said that it was not an issue. The crank is forged and can takethe load.Great Planes is now selling a thrust unit / prop extension (1:1 ) thatattaches to the flywheel end of a VW engine to take the thrust loads.Limbach engines are loosely based on VW. Where is the thrust bearing? Subarudirect drive applications where is the thrust bearing? Maybe someone has ananswer.Ken----- Original Message -----

Very interesting observations Ken The Ford A or B engines as used in Pietenpols have the output from theflywheel end and to boot the thrust flange is at the prop end. The outputbearing is considerably longer than the rest as well. ( Should be able tohandle P factor loads from me doing severe aerobatics. Big Grin ) My engineis a B with the crank drilled for oiling. The bearing sizes work out veryclose to those in an o-200 Continental. Perhaps the Ford engines aren't sofoolish after all?John-----Original Message-----
