Mike,How dare you risk offending those who seem to think this is a PietenpolBUILDERS list? So, let's try to keep it on that subject.First, those are not really mountains. Mountains are what they have outwhere Steve flies. I only had to climb to 2500' to clear (true-not by much)those "hills" on the trip north. That was around Chatanooga. On the otherhand, if you go a little East, like I did on the way home, you need to climbto 4500' and fly some low points at that. Ok, Ok, now the building contentpart. If you stick to the West route you won't need to install a cabinheater. Otherwise, a cabin heater with the front cockpit covered will keepyou warm. Another building consideration is if you plan to fill the frontcockpit with gear you will need to install some duct work or you will freezeand your gear will melt.Probably the last building tiip is to consider both a wing tank and fronttank if you are going to do much cross country. Otherwise you will probablyhave a lot more cross than country.I will be at Sun n Fun to continue this building discussion.Ted BNaples, FLP.S. I did not intend to mean that those "hills" are not hard. As Stevesays, don't touch them. You can't build or design a Piet strong enough toget that close.----- Original Message -----________________________________________________________________________________

Pietenpol-List: Sun-N-Fun

Seems like the cold and very windy weather kept a lot of folks from flying in toSun-N-Fun the first couple of days. I had to leave on Thursday a.m., so maybethings improved for the weekend.John Ficklen didn't get the time flown off his new Piet so he came in a motor home. The only Piet to be on the grounds while I was there was Alan Wise's venerable"Ol' Piet" with all the rustic touches that have been added over the years.People still love to look at it and Alan (83 yrs. old) still loves to talkto people about it and fly it to as many air shows and fly-ins as his wife willallow.I finished my condition inspection yesterday and am ready for the 2004 season.I want to get to the SAA reunion in Urbana, Brodhead, OSH but ONLY if there isa special tribute to Piets, MERFI, and a couple of local fly-ins. Of course thepromise of a pancake breakfast or other destinations that involve free/cheapfood can never be ignored. The plane looks to be in great shape in spite ofmy efforts to test it's limits. For those of you who follow my exploits, I havea good prop on the nose presently and another one in the duplicating machinefor a back-up. I seem to average one prop per annum! (Hope to break this streaksoon!!)I hope to run into a lot of the listers at some of the fly-ins this season. Itwill also be great to see some of the new Piets that are just coming on line.Later-Larry________________________________________________________________________________

I'm planning on going again this year, but not sure of exact dates yet. I am committedto going to a wedding in Calif on April 1, so I won't be able to bringmy project back there this year.If anyone wants to make some fast progress on your project, you could bring itand home with completed tail feathers or fuselage or whatever.Dick N.________________________________________________________________________________

Frank M (red/silver) and Bruce Laird (White/Blue) are flying their Big Pietsdown to Sun n Fun this year. Harold J (yellow) and I are flying our J3'sdown so we can participate in the Cub Convoy of 100+ Cubs. I am trying totalk Gardiner Mason to join us with his Piet, so I need help on the armtwisting. All in all we are flying: 2 J3 Cubs, 2 Big Piets, 1 Pietenpol, 1Taylorcraft, 1 Champ, 1 ultralite and possible 1 Chief. Should be a funflight down from Carrollton, Ga (just West of Atlanta).Barry Davis _____
