Fellas ,What would one expect to pay for a newly overhauled A-65-8. Generallyspeaking of course and ready to go into a certified airplane. Assume newSlicks and overhauled carb (Stromberg), Spider, and no prop hub or prop. Thanks, Bert________________________________________________________________________________

Bert,I don't know about a certified shop, but I had the following costs when Irebuilt mine:Runout core $1500Overhaul Crankshaft, $975Conn. Rods, RockerArms, GearsOverhaul Crankcase $575Millenium Cylinders $3250New Camshaft $225New Cam Followers $500New Slick Mags $830New Bearings, carb kit, $175gaskets, etc,Total $8,030Some of these costs are approximate (I'd have to dig through the invocies tosee what I actually paid), but overall it's pretty close. I haveessentially a brand new engine and it runs very well. I can't imagine howyou could pay more for an overhauled engine (except for the labor cost). Mycylinders were shot and would have to be rebuilt. El Reno wanted $550apiece to rebuild them, and they still would have been 60 years old. NewMilleniums are $800 each, with new pistons, rings, valves and valve springs, and rocker shafts. I decided it was worth it. Crankshaft was done atAircraft Specialties and crankcase was done at Divco. Assembly took a dayand was done by me under the supervision of an A&P, IA. The FAA didn't evenbalk at giving me a 25 hour test flight period, even though I had nooriginal logs for the engine, and told them I had rebuilt it myself. I didshow them all the green and yellow tags for all the parts I had put in it.JackNX899JP -----Original Message-----

Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: Re: Price for a new A-65My cost for overhauling my Continental A-80 is very close to these prices, with the exception of a new camshaft. They are VERY hard to find these days andexpect to pay $500. Try Sacramento Sky Ranch. They have an impressive list of parts for the small Continental engines. Also note, my above referenced engine was "advertised" as having only 5 SMOH. It was overhauled by a "shade-tree" A&P and was not airworthy. When we disassembled the engine, we found a shot camshaft, a worthless crankshaft. Theaccessory case was in dire need of repair as was the engine case.Don't make the same mistake I made in taking the owner's word for the overhaul, nor what is represented in an engine logbook. Get a second opinion beforeparting company with your cash. S.B.________________________________________________________________________________
