Pietenpol-List: Question about Aluminum Props

Post by matronics »

Hi All,I recently made an 1800-mile weekend roadtrip down to Georgia and back to pickup the engine that will eventually be sitting on the nose of my Piet. 15 hoursthere, and 15 hours back home, Saturday morning to Sunday night!Anyway, the engine is a C-75-12 that came directly off an Ercoupe (well, off theplane, then into a hangar for 10 years or so, then into my van), and the aluminumpropeller was still attached. The propeller was included in the sale.I was looking at the propeller last night, and was wondering about some of themarkings around the hub. Most of it is clear to me. Made by McCauley, 73" diameter,51" pitch, Serial number, etc. I've attached a photo. Stamped faintly intothe face ( just below MET-L-PROP, but hard to see in the photo) is the word"reconditioned". And, at roughly the 2 O'clock position there are two more numbersstamped into the face, TC842, and PC3 (hours and pitch change, maybe?).Anyone know what the significance of those two numbers are? I'm wondering if theprop has been re-pitched (something I would likely want to do to use it onmy Piet, anyway - 51" sounds like too much pitch for a Piet, I think). There wasa timely article in the last issue (I think) of Sport Aviation, about propellermaintenance, and it indicated that metal props can be re-pitched a totalof 8".Any ideas?Bill C.Read this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ttachments: http://forums.matronics.com//files/prop ... __________

Good information Dick.As I get close to finishing my Piet I was wondering about flying in theNorth country in the wintertime. Especially with the weather we are havingin the Midwest right now. Chicago and NW Indiana will have a high of around10 to 12 degrees tomorrow. Those of you that fly in the winter what is yourlower comfort level for temperatures? What kind of clothing do you wear? Irealize mileage may vary, but I would just like to get a read of how"rough" it is flying in the winter.Rick SchreiberIn windy and cold Valparaiso Indiana.> [Original Message]

Pietenpol-List: Question about Aluminum Props

Original test flights on 41CC were done with a metal prop(see top couple of pix athttp://www.flysquirrel.net/piets/CorkyPiet.html )As far as I know, performance was not the issue, butweight & balance with about 20 lbs. less weight on thenose can be quite a change.Somewhere along the line during test flights, the metalprop was replaced with a Flottorp 74x50, then later thatwas replaced with the Hegy 72x42. Perhaps Corky cancomment on the prop changes but the test flight notesdon't indicate any deficiencies in performance withthe earlier props.Oscar ZunigaAir Camper NX41CCSan Antonio, TXmailto: taildrags(at)hotmail.comwebsite at http://www.flysquirrel.net ________________________________________________________________________________

Mystery solved!Just took a quick look through the TCDS document, and on page 3, it says:"Production Basis: Production Certificate No.3"That would correspond to PC3. Thanks, Ryan. So, since the diameter/pitch hasn't been re-stamped, I am going to assume thatthe prop has not been repitched. The diameter checks out at 73" (with a tape measure).Bill C.Read this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ______Date: Thu, 10 Dec 2009 10:01:55 -0500

Pietenpol-List: winter flying with an A65

I still have all of my ski gear from when we lived in Oregonand that's all I would wear in the coldest of weather...long johns, ski bib, turtleneck, ski jacket, gloves, rabbit fur hat, goggles. I also have a face mask for whenthe wind is really cold and stinging. The one piece ofgear I would probably have trouble with in the Piet isheavy winter footwear because it istrouble enough as it is to get my shoes in onto the rudderbar; I can't imagine trying to get in with heavy insulatedboots.Dick is 100% correct on covering the front cockpit andI'm going to try to make a winter cover because that'swhere the really bad draft comes from, right up your pantslegs.I'm not sure where the rest of the discussion went off thetrack though, because the next posts we're likely to seewill be about flying winter IFR in the Piet, in full wintergarb, while attempting the dual mile-high rating. Now thereis an interesting mental picture.Oscar ZunigaAir Camper NX41CCSan Antonio, TXmailto: taildrags(at)hotmail.comwebsite at http://www.flysquirrel.net ________________________________________________________________________________
