So I finally have a pietenpol wing in my garage, have just started removing fabric and cutting rib stitching, hoping to get the fuselage moved in eary next week.Just going to go thru it real well, and get it recovered and flying again! It hasn't flown for about 8 years or so I think, so wish me luck!! And the looks from te neighbors was priceless! Just moved into my house in April, I think the neighbors thought I was kidding when I warned them about my projects!A quick history, my grandpa built it in the late 60's, corvair powered, he all but flew the wings off it! and well I can't wait to get it going!!Sent from my iPhone________________________________________________________________________________

I ordered my plans this weekend! My first major decision is where to buy wood.Since I am woodworker and have a fully equipped shop I decided to purchase roughsawn wood. I am going to check with some local wood companies but will mostlikely end up buying from McCormick lumber in Wisconsin. This will give meanother reason to go to brodhead and help justify the cost of buying precutwood from the aircraft suppliers. Reading the archived posts at this point is a double edged sword. Although yougain a lot of information you also read all the modifications people have madeto the plans. It is a bit confusing to a beginner to comprehend all this information.I was told to "search the archives!" in one of my first posts andunderstand that you veterans may get tired of seeing the same newbie questionsover and over. But, keep in mind at this point all this information is very intimidating.--------JohnRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: Tough choicesDate: Mon, 14 Jun 2010 08:47:21 -0400

John,I completely understand your frustration with the archives, yet I know youwill find them useful, especially late at night when you want to see ifsomeone else has done what you are considering....By making the journey to Mecca (Brodhead), you will see that very few peoplefollow the plans 100%! And, as long as your own ideas are based on solid A/Cbuilding techniques, you can do most anything you want. This list is greatplace to bounce those ideas off of, if you feel you need the support.Looking forward to your first question...wanna know what kind wood you canuse, other than Spruce??Gary BootheCool, CAPietenpolWW Corvair ConversionTail done, Fuselage on gear19 ribs done-----Original Message-----

Thanks Dan,Has anyone done the math to figure out how much rough lumber is needed for the complete project? McCormick says their boards are 1inch thick by 5 to9 inches wide. If I build a 3 piece wing versus a 1 piece does this mean I could take it apartand trailer my plane to distant fly-ins? I don't have themplans yet so how longwould the material need to be for my spars?Thanks--------JohnRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ______Date: Mon, 14 Jun 2010 09:10:00 -0400

Don't be intimidated... I am a relative newcomer and I too was a bit intimidatedearly on. Keep this in mind as you research all the old posts... decisionsfor most of the modifications will not need to be made for quite some time (dependingon where you start), so you will have a little while to consider whichones you really want to implement. This is one of the reasons I started withthe wings. I knew I was going to build a 3-piece wing, and my ribs were tobe built using the Pietenpol plans, so I went ahead and got busy on that. Inaddition, many suggested starting on the wings as because the material is relativelycheap and they will keep you busy for a long time while you research, study, and consider other aspects of the construction. I've been working on myproject for 16 months (not very consistently a times)... I'm nearing completionon my wings and center section, and I am glad that I took others advice togo this route. Not only is it a nice feeling to have two complete wing panelsin the shop, but I've resolved several of the very questions that you are probablyconsidering. Oh, I've still got plenty of questions, but I've had timeto study the drawings, comb over photos at westcoastpiet.com, watch Mike Cuy'svideo a dozen times, watch Gantzer's video a dozen times, etc. I've found that many of these guys are pretty helpful... some are obviously expertcraftsmen, but ALL of them were where you and I are at some point in theirproject. I don't think it is necessarily true that people don't want to answerthe same questions over and over... oh, perhaps there are some run of the millquestions, but generally speaking, I think they are trying to refer us newguys to information that may have been covered thoroughly and clearly by anotherbuilder, perhaps someone who is not around or active on the boards to repostthe information. Maybe I'm way off... but it seems that way to me.Either way, I wouldn't be afraid to ask anything. Someone will be along to helpyou figure out what you are struggling with. I will say this... your decisionto go to Brodhead this year may prove to be more valuable than all of yourweb research. Show up with a small tape measure, a note pad and a camera andyou will leave with several good ideas that you can consider with a little moreconfidence. Hey, at least you didn't walk in here and "disconcert the masses" as they say.I managed to do that right off the bat. How did I do that you ask? Well, you'llhave to "search the archives" for that answer. Thanks Mark, that made me feel better. Do I need to contact the FAA before I startbuilding? I understand they need to inspect the aircraft at several stagesof construction.--------JohnRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ______Date: Mon, 14 Jun 2010 09:32:58 -0400
