Pietenpol-List: cowl support

Ok folks I have been looking around the archives and have not found the answerto my mystery yet. I am preparing to start my turtle deck and I cant seem tofind what dimensions of the wood is height and width. Secondly I want to put a head rest or even maybe go a little higher in the back,I watched a friend today taxi out in his GN-1 and it looked a little low. Any thoughts? Thanks, BillN424BKRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: cowl support

Hey guys I see some of you have a piece of what looks like 1 x 1 behind the cowlsupport that is bent the same radius. Then I see some of you have placed whatlooks like 1 x 1 in between the cowl support and the panel. Those that have the bent radius what was the method to you madness. It looks niceand seems as if it would give great support the cowl when it is laid.BillN424BKRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... __________

Bill,You may need as many as 4 or 5 of those, depending on how you design things.Take a piece of 3/4" plywood or particle board and make a template thatmatches the radius you decide upon. You'll need to clamp all together withpipe clamps or furniture clamps (2 would do), so make it so you can sandwichthe pieces between. Cut a bunch of thin strips, 1/16" x 3/4", glue andclamp...its fun!Gary BootheCool, CAPietenpolWW Corvair ConversionTail done, Fuselage on gear20 ribs done-----Original Message-----

BillI made the turtle deck from 1/4 by 1 inch redwood. Light and strong. The height is the same as the instrument panel. That is so the shoulderstrap will not put downward pressureon the spine. Dale> [Original Message]

Bill, I used 1/4" fir strips from Lowes, my deck is 2" higher than plans andmatched the forward cowls. A suggestion, don't do as I did and use 11strips. I did so to smooth out the deck and Fireman Dan pointed out I addeda lot of weight to the rear of my ship, good advice. I drilled lighteningholes to help a little.
