This is the first wooden aircraft I have built and its great. This site has helped a bunch. I have completed several ribs and am curious. Do I need to apply any varnish yet to protect from moisture etc. Or should I just wait until the entire wing is ready? Thanks.Pete Anderson ________________________________________________________________________________Date: Sat, 02 Oct 2010 22:27:46 -0400

My two cents on Gorilla Glue.- Yes, it foamsand expands as it cures.- Yes, it is inferiorto other good glues and epoxies in every testI've read about.- Yes, it is inexpensive andreadily available.- Yes, it will harden up intoa useless rock in its container over time (notas long as you'd think), so use it or lose it.My only experiences with actual applications ofit were not good; both failed.- On my airplane,I used it in a non-structural and inconspicuouslocation to reattach some thin plywood to twowood framing members.- The glue joints failedwhen an inexperienced passenger's shoe pushedon the backside of the plywood.- In the otherapplication, one wooden handle of my hedge trimmercame loose from the steel handle.- I pulledoff the handle, gooped plenty of Gorilla Gluedown the hole after moistening (water is theactivator), jammed the steel tang back in, andlet it cure.- The joint held for a few monthsbut eventually the glue crumbled and failed.Oscar ZunigaAir Camper NX41CCSan Antonio, TXmailto: taildrags(at)hotmail.comwebsite at http://www.flysquirrel.net --- -------- ------ --- - le, List Admin.=0A=0A=0A ________________________________________________________________________________Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: Ribs/Varnish

Although I didn't build 41CC, I've seen plenty of otherbuilders' hints and tips, and most of them seem to sayit's easiest to wait till the wing is all complete todo the varnishing. One good tip from the old newslettersinvolves getting a pump-type oil can and connecting apiece of plastic tubing to the spout, then running thatto a brush so that you can just keep feeding varnish tothe brush without continually dipping into a can.Unless I'm mistaken, Mike Cuy's video shows that he didthe completed wings with varnish at the end.Oscar ZunigaAir Camper NX41CCSan Antonio, TXmailto: taildrags(at)hotmail.comwebsite at http://www.flysquirrel.net ________________________________________________________________________________

My first car was actually a 1966 110hp Corvair. Fun to drive, but very poorquality. Not a terribly reliable engine, either.I hear some people are actually putting those things in aeroplanes thesedays.Best of luck, GaryJack PhillipsNX899JPRaleigh, NC _____

Gardiner, he can't have too much fun until he finishes building those ribs forhis wing. Now that the engine first-run is out of the way, maybe he'll builda few more before the end of the year.

Pete, I went through a couple of design modifications on my TE. My first attemptwas a tongue and groove approach, which didn't work out as planned, so I resortedto a simple butt joint with top and bottom gussets.I'm not exactly sure what is "typical"... it just made sense to do some final prepall the ribs in a batch prior to installing on the spars. I figured thisapproach would ensure consistent LE and TE alignment.peterk48 wrote:> > K5YAC wrote:> > I masked off the areas I intended to glue (LE, TE, etc.) and applied spar varnishto each rib. Not sure that it was necessary, or if I would do it that wayagain, but it definitely is easier to get to those little nooks when you canhold the ribs in your hands.> > > Thanks Mark. Below is the link to a short video that Ryan Mueller posted on YouTube(Thanks, Ryan). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DR5DpgrjrQ This is a short video, because the engine run was very short. We spent thenext 4 hours chasing down loose leads on the test stand, and cleaning out mycarb from all the fine dust that the fuel hose had dumped. We fired it uplater (about 10pm) and it ran well, and also the following morning. I amtold the neighbors to FLAG Aviation are sending notes of congratulations viaRick Lindstrom, the owner of FLAG. More video's will follow...If you look closely, you may note that I am wearing my official CC#5 shirtfrom 2004! That's when this engine was put together; not at the CorvairCollege, but immediately following. I needed to get it closed up and cratedso I could move, so for 6 years I have been wondering what kind of job Idid...Three individuals, Ryan Mueller, Mike Studer and Beau Hotchkiss (a HS seniorI brought with me), plus William Wynne, worked tirelessly for approximately16 hours, along with the intermittent assistance of Brother Roy and WoodyHarris, to make this happen. Without them, and the facilities at FLAG, itwould been a very long and tortuous process. That all made me think about just what comes with the with the William Wynneengine building catalogue...First: You open it up, and this little guy pops out and says, "Wanna' builda Corvair engine with me?" Every time after that, when you call him forclarifications, or to get corrected on your course because you have strayeda bit, every time after that when you attend another Corvair College...He gets bigger and bigger, until the day comes when it's time to run theengine...Then he turns into a GIANT, hovering over you and your engine, protectingyou from your bad ideas, patiently explaining for an hour the nuances ofsetting timing, guiding you through problem solving and fault diagnosis, until your engine finally comes to life and you know it now has a soul! After congratulating you and assuring you that it was YOU who accomplishedthis, he deflates into the Little Man, jumps back in the book, and awaitsyour call. Thanks, William!!Gary BootheCool, CAPietenpolWW Corvair ConversionTail done, Fuselage on gear20 ribs done> _________________________________________________________> search the CorvAircraft archives athttp://www.maddyhome.com/corvairsrch/index.jsp> to UNsubscribe from CorvAircraft, send a message toCorvAircraft-leave(at)mylist.net> Other CorvAircraft list info is athttp://www.krnet.org/corvaircraft_inst.html>> _________________________________________________________> search the CorvAircraft archives athttp://www.maddyhome.com/corvairsrch/index.jsp> to UNsubscribe from CorvAircraft, send a message toCorvAircraft-leave(at)mylist.net> Other CorvAircraft list info is athttp://www.krnet.org/corvaircraft_inst.html___ ... ____search the CorvAircraft archives athttp://www.maddyhome.com/corvairsrch/index.jsp to UNsubscribe from CorvAircraft, send a message toCorvAircraft-leave(at)mylist.netOther CorvAircraft list info is athttp://www.krnet.org/corvaircraft_inst.html___ ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: More sad news

Every time after that, when you call him forclarifications, or to get corrected on your course because you have strayeda bit, every time after that when you attend another Corvair College...He gets bigger and bigger, until the day comes when it's time to run theengine...Then he turns into a GIANT, hovering over you and your engine, protectingyou from your bad ideas, patiently explaining for an hour the nuances ofsetting timing, guiding you through problem solving and fault diagnosis, until your engine finally comes to life and you know it now has a soul!
