Pietenpol-List: Offset on vertical stab

Post by matronics »

Howdy,I am going to put on my tailfeathers tonight or tomorrow and am wondering what king of an offset I should use.I saw 1/2" in the orange book, but would rather know from someone flying.I am using a Lycoming O-235 and need to know, looking forward if the leading edge of the vertical stab goes to the left or right and how much. Thanks,Dave ________________________________________________________________________________

Dave, if you put in an offset the leading edge of the vertical stab shouldgo to the left (to provide a right-turing moment) when using normal aircraftengines. If using Corvairs or other odd engines that turn the wrong way,you would offset it to the right.Whether to do it or not depends on whether your engine mount has any offsetbuilt in. It is generally preferable to offset the engine if possible.Jack PhillipsNX899JPRaleigh, NC _____

I'm just doing this to 41CC now, incrementally. First increment was to offsetthe stab in the direction Jack has stated (to the left, looking forward), by about3/8". I then removed the bent-metal trim tab at the trailing edge of therudder. Flew pretty well but still yawed to the left. Should have offset thestab by 1/2" but no more than that.Next increment was to check engine thrustline and it was zero-zero. I have nowoffset the engine thrustline 2 degrees right and 2 degrees down and althoughit still yaws to the left, it's getting very close now and the stick forces (elevator)in cruise are improved as well. These adjustments were done using enginemount washers, but after I add another 1/2 degree of right thrust, we'regoing to machine some aluminum spacers to replace the washers and we're done.Next will be to play with the bungee tension that I have on the elevator bellcrankfor nose up trim.I never imagined that 41CC might be a hands-off airplane, but it's looking likeit might be possible, in smooth air, with just the right amount of fuel in thetank ;o)--------Oscar ZunigaSan Antonio, TXAir Camper NX41CCRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ______Date: Wed, 06 Oct 2010 08:36:23 -0500

Ah, so there's a soft surface in there - it's not hard-on-hard-on-hard, which Ican just imagine would beat the heck out of the aluminum. Engineering by intuitionis no way to go through life, I guess. Dave,I had our local DAR look at my project a couple of weeks ago for an interim inspectionand we talked about the vert. stab. offset. He told me, rule of thumbfor Cubs, Aeronacas, and of course Piets was this. If you sight along the vert.stab. your sight line should be to a point 1/2 way between the center lineof the fuselage and the outer edge of the firewall. Left or right depends onyou engine. He did mention you can build something into the engine mount aswell but my recollection was. that this works without an engine offset.I believe he knows what he is talking about as he does high end restoration workon older Pipers and has won several awards at Oshkosh in recent years.--------Jon Coxwell GN-1 BuilderRecycle and preserve the planetRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ______Date: Fri, 8 Oct 2010 01:16:39 +0000 (UTC)

This week I've been helping Gene Rambo prepare to cover his Pietenpolproject. Today we got the lift struts finished and got the airplane allassembled for the first time. Anyone who has been to this stage on theirPietenpol project knows that this is a magic moment.Gene has done a fantastic job on his Model A powered airplane, building itjust the way Bernard built his first one, with aileron cables external tothe wing, wire-wrapped and soldered cables, and period hardware (I think Ieven saw some #7 wood screws holding the stabilizer in place), no brakes, smooth tires on the wire wheels (not the wheels in the photos), and atailskid. The workmanship is impeccable. I've attached a couple ofpictures.I'm looking forward to seeing this one at Brodhead next year.Jack Phillips________________________________________________________________________________Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: Gene Rambo's Pietenpol
