Hey,Anybody who built an entry step from tubing that sticks out from thefuselage. how did you attach it?? I'm kinda scratching my head. I thinkI'm going to run my pipes down the sides, English "SE-5" style and myinletted step won't work well with a pipe just above it.Secondly, does anyone have a leftover short piece of streamline tubing thatwould work for the step? Probably need about 8" max.Douwe________________________________________________________________________________

Douwe,My step is a U-shape tube that is welded to an 'L' shaped plate (the shortleg of the L facing up so it could be bolted). There are 3 bolts that passthru, just under the seat, where I have fitted an oak block, backed up withanother metal bracket. Unfortunately, all pics are on my other laptop athome, and I won't have access until this weekend.Gary Boothe

I wish I had thought of adding a step to help access the centersection forrefueling. It's amazing how many airports don't have adequate ladders fortheir fuel trucks. Here are a couple of pictures showing how I attached mine:Here is the Front StepHere's an out of focus picture showing how it is attached under thefloorboard. Then here is the rear step:And a picture showing it in place:Good luck,Jack PhillipsNX899JP "Icarus Plummet"Raleigh, NC _____

I have the two pieces of tubing (telescoping) sitting in the corner waiting for me to build a step very similar to what you have described. Got the idea from the GN-1 plans. ----- Original Message -----

Jack,When you cover the fuselage, do the metal brackets end up under the covering or over the covering? For example, in your picture, do you remove all the brackets, cover, then replace the brackets over the covering... making holes in the covering for the bolts and just pressing the covering in against the wood? Do you taper that bottom "longeron" around the brackets so the covering is closer to the wood side panel?Beautiful work, by the way! Thanks,Ray KrauseBuilding Sky Scout in Colusa, CA ----- Original Message -----

Ray,The steps are under the fabric. Note the small strips of spruce at the edgeof the plywood in the pictures. This holds the fabric off the plywood a bit(about =BC=94) to help keep the fabric contours smooth. The frabic goes overall the fittings, such as the landing gear/lfit strut fittings as well.Fabric patches are then applied over all protuberances where bolt heads areunder the fabric to provide extra reinforcement against chafing. And beforethe fabric is sinstalled, anti-chafing tape is applied over any sharpprojections beneath the fabric.Jack PhillipsNX899JP =93Icarus Plummet=94Raleigh, NC _____

Thanks, Jack. So you will have a difficult time getting any brackets off in the future? Guess you won't need to take them off, unless an untimely event takes place. You never need to tighten the hardware, as you do with prop bolts on a wooden prop....as when the weather changes? Gee, the Pietenpols are easier than I thought. Guess I should not think so hard! Thanks again.Ray Krause ----- Original Message -----

Well said, Kevin. As for your comment that such a repair could be completed in an afternoon, that is true if the covering finish was dope or PolyTone, which can be wipedoff with a rag soked in MEK. If painted with latex or Polyurethane, thepaint must be sanded off and that takes a loooooong time (ask me how Iknow!)Jack PhillipsNX899JP "Icarus Plummet"Raleigh, NC-----Original Message-----

Thanks, Kevin. That will make my life easier when it comes time to cover the fuselage. I will study the Westcoast Piet site before I do anything. Nice to know the fittings do not need to be snugged up after construction. Thanks for the help. Also thanks to Jack for his reply. The wheels I have are 19X2.5 and weight 12 lbs each WITHOUT the tire and tube. the poor old Sky Scout would end up either very nose heavy, or earth bound! Thanks again.Ray Krause----- Original Message -----
