Pietenpol-List: Piet driver (slightly off-topic)

Subject: Pietenpol-List: Piet driver (slightly off-topic)At the risk of being off-topic, I want to brag a little bit. Myseventeen year-old son, Kevin, successfully passed his privatepilot checkride this afternoon. Other than a few hours at thebeginning of the training process, all of his hours, includingthe checkride, were in our 1957 PA22/20-150 Piper Pacer.Apparently it had been awhile since the DE had given acheckride in a taildragger. So Kevin is well on his way to being a Piet driver -- okay, there'sthe connection to the list -- as soon as we finish building it.Cheers, Ken________________________________________________________________________________

Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: Piet driver (slightly off-topic)Congrats to your son Ken! You must be a very proud father. And to do it in aPacer is an extra feather in his AND your cap! Bit of a twitchy bird on landingand roll out compared to many of the longer fuse more docile taildraggers outthere. My son did about 12 hours on our Stinson with me doing the training. You can probablysee where this is going. Father son training never ends well. At 16he's taken an aviation sabatical in favour of girls and snowboards. Perhaps itsthe many years I dragged him to Brodhead and Oshkosh... I'm still terribly proud of the lad and his zest for life but I hear stories likeyours and am a tad envious of your situation. Aviation is always more funwhen you can share with friends and family. Scott KnowltonSlow builder, Burlington ON. -----Original Message-----

Hi Ken,Congratulations to you and your son. This is a real accomplishment that will help him in all his endeavors going forward in life, not to mention a life-long shared love and attachment to his father. Not too many people have this gut-level determination to finish a difficult goal. Dan HelsperPuryear, TN-----Original Message-----

Very cool, Ken. By introducing him to aviation at this age, you've ensuredhe'll never be rich.At least, not rich in money. But he'll be rich in knowledge and spirit.Jack PhillipsNX899JP "Icarus Plummet"Raleigh, NC-----Original Message-----

Send him out here to BC. I know there's at least one here. The Citabria I'm currently renting is a trainer andthere's quite a few folks, young and old(er) trainingon it. I'll ask Bob, the tail wheel guy about it nexttime I see him. I've met one guy who is also an exair cadet having learned, as I originaly did in '60,in the Fleet 80 Canuck. Although he's a few yearsyounger than I.Clif> >> Good observation Ken. I teach only tailwheel instruction in Canada.
