Informative pictures, Matt.I'm building my hubs the same way, using 19" aluminum rims and stainless spokes.I'm adapting them to very light dirt bike disc brakes and using go-cart calipers.Don't forget to chamfer those spoke holes.Mike HardawaySent from an Apple iThingie. On Dec 26, 2012, at 11:13 PM, "jet_jockey" wrote:> > Had my brother sketch this up. Chris Rusch wrote:> Just so we all can learn, what was the cause of the accident?Greetings all,I am Orrin D. Hoopman. It's a bit of a complicated story as to how my father diedin a Pietnepol in 1983. The gist of it is, the winds were not very good thatday at a small fly-in airshow in Shelton WA, as the airport was located closeto a mountain range. In the morning, the pilot, Fred Imrie, had taken me upfirst, and then my half-brother, Eric (whose socks you see under the a/c in thepic); the other kid is the pilot's son. The winds got a little worse, and thepilot decided to hold off on taking my father up until they improved. Aftera long lunch break, the wind had changed direction, other a/c started taking offagain, and seemed to be doing well enough. Out of the kindness of his heart,Fred opted to "give it a go". This was an uncontrolled rural airfield, withthe radio staffed by ROTC Air Cadets (I think). They direction for takeoffs hadn'tbeen changed for the afternoon, and there was an oblique tailwind on therunway.Anyhow, they got into line to taxi. I waved at my father, but couldn't get thecamera to work for the take-off shot (it hadn't been wound forward, and I wasunfamiliar with it). A Stearman took off in front of them, and some other smallplane was in line behind them. The end of the runway was obscured from the crowdby trees and bushes. It only took a minute to notice that the Pietenpol wasn'tin formation on the circle of planes rising out of the field. In an attemptto climb out over the treeline after an extended takeoff roll, it had crashedshortly after takeoff from an altitude of about 200ft. Evidently, the winds coming over the mountains nearby had created a "roller" wave, causing the instantaneous loss of lift for the struggling little Piet, andit nosed in, killing Orrin C.'s son, Delbert O., from asphyxiation due to crushed/punturedlungs, and giving the pilot a broken jaw. Let's get back to the two black-white negatives of a Sky Scout I have here. I estimatethey are from 1932. One is an oblique view from the right rear showingwhat appears to be a lady wearing a snug-fitting white hat sitting in the cockpit;the other is a full left side view of the plane taken from a point in linewith the prop. Both show a logo on the side that reads "Pietenpol B-4-T Junior"(?). The negatives have some minor damage to the glossy side, but appeargood enough to try taking a chance on getting them developed. However, I am inTaiwan, and I may have trouble finding a suitable firm to handle the job withoutaccidentally damaging them.Is anyone here familiar with these two old photographs? If they are already incirculation, then there's no need to try having them printed here.Someday, I'd like to lay my hands on a set of the original drawings. Can you believethat I still don't have any? Ha!--------Pietenpol's Forever!Read this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ______Date: Sat, 29 Dec 2012 18:57:25 -0800 (PST)

Orrin, after your grandfather passed your grandmother still had copies of the originaldrawings. Some of the drawings I saw were not included in the plan sets. Dick Gleason from Austin used to produce the copies for her whenever shesold a set. Your Grandpa had autographed several of these copies. I think Imay have received the last autographed one she had. As far as original drawings,I have ever only seen one set of these. The original drawings had whitelines on dark blue or black paper. I think that Vi Kapler has a set of the original"blueprints". Goldie gave many of the drawings she had remaining to oneof the members of the Austin EAA chapter. Thank You for sharing the photographand the story of your father. You should have seen the crowd that gatheredaround your grandfather during his last visit to Brodhead. Wow, I thought hewas a rock star. Your grandma did too! Hey Fred,The Piet taxis and turns amazingly well on the skis. It will turn just as tightas with the wheels. They even have very small keels on them and still it swingsright around. Keeping them waxed makes a huge difference in taxi, takeoffand handling in general. For a couple of winters I drug the tailwheel throughthe snow. That little wheel found all the frozen bumps under the snow andjust wasn't much fun. A couple of years ago I made a tail ski. It is wonderful. It changed the whole handling experience. It just glides along now. I puta small keel in the ski. I thought I had a picture of it somewhere but can'tfind it now. I'll try to get a picture of it today and post it.Don EmchNX899DEP.S. Kip, there probably is some kind of servo mounted attachment out there forthe Go Pro. That's probably too advanced for me though. I have enough troublegetting past "on" and "record". Your grandma did too! > > Dan Wilson> Austin, MNThank you, Dan, for sharing your warm and pleasant thoughts during this holidayseason. So happy to learn that Orrin C. had become a "Rock Star" (icon of yourtroupe)!I only saw my grandfather a half-dozen or so times during his life. All the tripswere memorable, enjoyable, and influential in my character, but we lived sofar, far away... in Washington or Alabama, or wherever my father's work tookhim during my early life. One time, we took "The Empire Builder" train all theway from Seattle to Minneapolis to see my father's family in Austin. How interestingfor me it was to learn that Minnesotans called my favorite pastry "Longjohns"(I called them Maple Bars) ... Gee... It must be COLD there! Hahaha My Aunt Bernis is the one who sent me the negatives a few years back that showwhat I believe to be the original B-4-T Junior "Sky Scout". Still don't know ifthe pics are in circulation amongst the Pietenpol faithful, or I should tryto revive them. I'd be willing to do my best to get a set of pics printed andmail them off in exchange for a set of the drawings from somebody. The drawingsare something that our piece of the family lost when my father died. Nobodyseems to know what happened to the ones we had...Seems at times to me that I became orphaned by the whole family in 1983, as nonehad ever lost a father before, and they couldn't understand the lonely positionI was thrown into at that time, in light of my father having remarried severalyears prior. That month, managed to finish my finals for the college degreehe wanted me to have and I went to work immediately, but I "crashed and burned"not long afterwards.Oh well.. as they say, "That's life! Take it or leave it!"To all... I wish the Pietenpol Bunch...Have a VERY Happy New year!--------Pietenpol's Forever!Read this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... __________

Very nice, Don! Interesting how much your windshield distorts or vibratesin the slipstream - I'll bet you can't see that with your naked eyes.I've always wondered about ski-flying - how do you tell where the runway isfor landing (or maybe it doesn't matter, if the snow is deep enough). Is iteasy to find your way back to the airport, with everything white? Whatdepth of snow do you require? So many questions, as I contemplate building a set of skis for my Piet.Jack PhillipsNX899JPSmith Mountain Lake, Virginia-----Original Message-----
