As the new guy on the internet block, I am looking at going to Brodhead for thefirst time this year, and I am not sure what to do. I am thinking that I willcome in on Thursday and leave on Saturday. Where do I stay? Can I camp? Food?Is scotch the only drink, or will I be accepted with other forms of adult beverage?(Wink)How about a thread on tips and tricks for Brodhead? Thanks to all in advance.BTW, wing rib jig is done- first rib to be done this week, hopefully before I leaveon my next trip.--------Semper Fi,TerryRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... __________

I am going to Brodhead again this year, hopefully on Wed. In addition to Gregs post , there is Mc d's Subway and a bunch of good small local cafes in town which is a mile or so away. I dont know about Scotch this is Wisc and they know beer. If you want a place to stay Monroe is a town 10 mi west with some nice motels or you can camp on the field.Dick N.----- Original Message -----

So did you you cut the pieces first and then try to assemble the fuselage?I think the better approach is to get the upper longerons (on the workbench)to follow the prescribed curve, then cut the cross-pieces to fit, whilekeeping everything in alignment and the uprights vertical, as shown below:Jack PhillipsNX899JP "Icarus Plummet"Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia-----Original Message-----

Empty weight when new in 1972 was 600 lbs.Empty weight after rebuild in 2001 was 670lbs.Fuel burn at gross weight is between 5 GPH at 2300 RPM and 5.7 GPH at 2450 RPMand above. I flight plan for 70 MPH for any cross country flights but usually cruising speedis 75-85 MPH. I averaged 70 MPH on my Brodhead trip in 1996. It also included70 stops in about 13 states. I was gone 19 days. It would be fun to do againsometime. What else would you like to know? Good one Jack! This will be only my third trip to this great event, but my family and I have beenlooking forward to it for some time. Camping on the field would be great, but with a family (wife and 7 year old son), I've found that it is well worththe money to get a hotel room. I'm not sure that they would be too excited aboutour return if we had to endure the downpours and "artillery shots" that Jackand others described last year. We heard them up close over in Rockford too,but were staying safe and dry indoors. Yeah, we chickened out, but that weatherwas really something last year, right? So, having said all that... a friendrecommend the Hampton Inn in Rockford, which is pretty nice and has a goodbreakfast waiting first thing in the morning. Rockford is about 25 minutesfrom Brodhead, but it's not too bad of a drive. Mostly rural, which is realpretty up there. If you will have access to a car, consider Rockford... thereis plenty of good lodging, restaurants and other services. I would like to add that the Friday night dinner has recently been a boiled fishball with boiled veges. Unless you really like fish, you'll probably want tomake other arrangements. On the other hand... Saturday's pork chop is prettygood eats. Finally, since this is your first trip... do not forget you camera and a note pad. These are more important than your tooth brush. You will be sorry if youdon't come prepared to take notes, names, and lots of pictures. The Hatz Biplane fly-in occurs on the same field, and there are several other oldtimey and interesting aircraft to see. Be prepared to have a great time. Looking forward to seeing everyone! pietflyr(at)bellsouth.net wrote:> Well said, John. But you forgot to mention the flatulence. Jack and Chris,I didn't "jig" the fuselage for joining the two halves. What I did was draw acenterline down the length of the table and got both halves of the fuselage standingvertical. I joined the fore with the appropriate width strut so it measures24". I continued from front to back by cutting and fitting individual struts(one at a time, with centerlines themselves to match the fuse centerlineto know I was accurate and the fuselage was square). When I got to the tail-end,the beveled edges joined at the centerline. From front to back everythingseems right on--all except the 11" station. It has me a little stumped. Most likely, even though I measured repeatedly, I probably made some mistake ina measurement I haven't caught.Regardless, maybe I should ask-- if I unclamp the 11" station and allow it to opento its natural curve (knowing the ones fore and aft of it are correct), isit okay to just measure this (again, about 12") and cut the spacer to fit? Anyonesee a problem with this if my re-measurement of dimensions doesn't turnup a solution? Thanks again.TomRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: Fuselage question

I'm with ya Tom... sounds like a reasonable approach as it doesn't look like itwould take much to straighten it out... BUT, are your longerons square at thetail post? In other words, when joined together, are they 2" wide at the rearor 1" as perscribed in the drawing? If they are still square (2" wide whencombined), you can taper the inside, which will straighten out your natural curvea bit. You say that you are building the long fuse, which is what I am building. I foundthat a 7* angle cut (or sanded) 1/2" in at the rear works perfectly. Cutting1/2" in makes for a combined 1" width at the tail post. As for the angles,if you figure them from your rear most cross brace, you will see that the angleat the tail post is 14*, or 7* off each longeron if you were to split thetriangle... for a combined angle (when joined together) of 14*. I did my fuse the same way you are doing yours... I jigged the sides, but onlyused a centerline and clamps to join the two. I don't think that I encounteredthe problem that you are describing, but I can't honestly remember. I'll tryto remember to measure this evening. tdudley(at)umn.edu wrote:> Jack and Chris,> > I didn't "jig" the fuselage for joining the two halves. Also, along with your notepad and camera, bring a tape measure. If camping, bring your own soap and towel for the showers. You might want to bringyour own hot water, too. It seems to be in pretty short supply.Jack-----Original Message-----

No Curt, the dimensions are not in the plans for that gusset. I don't recall anyprevious discussion about it, though. You can just scale the plans (which I think is what Chuck was saying). It's notthat fussy.I used 7" for the bottom dimension - matching the gusset on the bottom (see attachedphoto), and the top was about 4 inches or so.Bill C.Read this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ttachments: http://forums.matronics.com//files/2010 ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Brodhead

Hey all I just got home frme OSH and Brodhead. Anybody know who dropped off 2 sets of wing ribs and tail section at the hangar? They all look real nice. Also there were a lot of guys working at Brodhead today, Mowing washing and doing lots of cleaning. It was very impressive. Oh, I delivered the fuselage there today also.Dick N.________________________________________________________________________________

Jack,Just got home a couple of days ago and I am finally back on the computer.I want to thank you for the kind invitation to the Bratfest. My grandson and Ithoroughly enjoyed ourselves. At 15 Eli is very much into food and it was agood opportunity for me to teach him some socialization skills. I also enjoyedputting faces with the names I see on the list. I hope to see you again ata future Brodhead gathering.--------Jon Coxwell GN-1 BuilderRecycle and preserve the planetRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ______Date: Sun, 29 Jul 2012 19:40:50 +0000 (UTC)
