If your engine is a C-85-12 you can put a starter on it. If it isn't, youcan't. Easiest way, other than looking at log books, is to see if there is ablanked off pad in the top center of the accessory pad at the rear of theengine between the magnetos. Also, look in the log book. A C-85-8 does nothave this accessory case, and will not accept a starter.Ed________________________________________________________________________________

Ed,Thanks. I am looking at the original engine log dating backto 1940 I received from the seller...(the plane is still in Corpus)....and the log shows TYPE: A-80. Serial Number 806909.I can't find any where in the three engine logs where it saysthe engine is a C-85. When I get to Corpus I will look at theengine compartment for a blanked off pad in the top center of the accessory pad. Thanks again Ed for the reply.MikeDallas>If your engine is a C-85-12 you can put a starter on it. Thanks for the tips..........I appreciate it very much. The solution may be a McDowell starter. Since itwill be hard to find, I will have my work cut out forme. The A-80 has no provisions for a starter and I don't know of any way to retro fit.If hand proping is a major concern of yours you may try to find a McDowel starter. They are hard to find and can give problems but it's the best solution with thatengine. The McDowel starter is a lever operated cable that runs to a ring on thepropshaft. It works much like a lawnmower starter. Place the engine so it's comingup on compresion and pull the lever. The mechanical advantage of the lever pullswthe cable which engages the ring on the prop shaft and rotates the engine. Youbeter have impulse mags for this system!Michael King wrote:> Ed,>> Thanks. I stand corrected. If you have an A-80-9 there is provisions for a starter. AnA-80-8has no provisions for the starter. Since the engine is not in a certificated airplane, you could remove the accessory case and replace it with a -9 case and the appropriategears and components. Again, the parts to convert to a -9 are going to be hardtofind. Get a copy of the Instruction Manual for models A-50, A-65, A75 and A-80.Itgives a parts breakdown. You will loose performance from the increased empty weightwith a starter so beware.David B. I'll look around through my stuff and see if I have anything on the A-80.WOW! Where'd he find that relic? It belongs in a museum, but I'm glad to seethose old airplanes and engines still flying.Ed________________________________________________________________________________
