This is what Mike Sent Me on Smoke. Copinfo(at)ix.Netcom.Com Tim Cunningham Des Moines, Iowa (515) 237-1510 I welded a 1/4" Swaglok (stainless) female fitting to one of myrear cyl. exhaust stacks about 1 or 2 " down from the flange. THEN drilled two no. 60 drillholes thru the fitting into the stack. This is where the smoke oil willbe pumped into the stack- you get good smoke because the back cyl. piperuns a little hotter and up high on the stack you get good heat too. Ithen connected a length of 1/4" stainless tubing to that female Swaglokfitting about 6" long. (you could get away with copper or mild steelhere too I would say.) Then I coupled that to some rubber hose w/ hoseclamps to dampen the vibration of the engine so it wouldn't fatigue thatwelded fitting and steel supply line. This short, about 3" long, pieceof rubber hose can then be used to couple more 1/4" tubing back to yourcockpit area. At this point you could use alum. steel, copper, or hardwalled poly tubing- the Eastman type you see in supply books typicallyused for running airspeed lines, etc. in wings I went to Wal-Mart andbought a 40 oz or so pump up bug sprayer poly bottle for about 10 $ andconnected my tubing to that with various simple fittings found at anyhardware store. Some of my fittings are just clamped with ty-wrapstightly. To buy oil in your area you need to call 800-782-7852 and askthem for a local Texaco oil distributor near you. Get several of these numbers from them and then call eachvendor and ask them specifically if they carry or can order you 5 gallonpails of Canopus No. 13 oil. It is also known as product code 519. Mostwill tell you they can only get the 55 gal. drums but that is not trueas I have gotten the 5 gallon sizes but it had to be ordered and took afew weeks to come in. A good price is between 23 and 30$ for the 5gallons. There may be other oils good for smoke too but the stuff I'mtelling you about is what all the airshow and aerobatic folks use. It isbasically a highly refined paraffinic mineral oil. I have heard of people trying to use small electric pumps to deliverthe oil but have not heard what the results were. The bug sprayer issimple and just requires some time to pump up. You want to pick up asprayer that is small enough to rest beside you in the cockpit so youcan re-pressurize it after a smoke run or two. Some of those sprayerstake too many pumps to pressurize- I picked the Better Homes and Gardenpoly sprayer for $6.44 and it works very well. The reason for the smalldrill holes is that they will eventually open up some with oxidation andwear but really you want them small so you don't just go thru all youroil in 2 seconds ! You can always enlarge those holes or hole if itproves to be too little flow. The opposite end of the spectrum is thatif the holes are too big you'll pump more oil thru than can be vaporizedand the unspent oil will end up all over your gear legs and belly. Thisis also true when using smoke at low power settings- not hot enough tovaporize the oil fully. Robert Hensarling just got done putting a systemon his GN-1. You might want to see if he has any new or different tipsto offer. He's on the group. Happy smoking !! Mike C. Mike- Swaglok is a trade name for a patented type of compressiontype fitting. You don't have to use the swagelok- any fitting that can bewelded onto your exhaust stack and then connected to your plumbing will work. The key thing is to keep those pinholes small....the drill holes that gothru your stack wall. You can always enlarge those holes if you find the smoke notadequate. Hope this helps, Mike C. ________________________________________________________________________________
