Subject: Pietenpol-List: ShacklesDear Joe C,I feel strongly that you should get on this list and explain to the group how you solved the high cost of shackles in such an inexpensive manner. There has been a lot of traffic on this subject lately and you could solve many of their problems if you would care to do so. ThanksCorky inLa using inexpensive Joe C shackles.________________________________________________________________________________

I found this method in an old BPA news letter and was able to find all the parts new at a surplus store here in Wichita. I am not sure if I could find the chain link covers any more. I used industrial drive chain links. I ground off the pin heads andpressed out the remainder. The holes are a tight 3/16 inch. A coupleof washers are used for spacing. The industrial chain is a Reynolds#40, I believe, and can withstand a lot more than 2000 pounds force.per link.(I saw an article that claimed 4500 pounds to distortion.Total cost for the plane would be about $30 if you had to buy alength. I was able to pick up the tag end off a 100ft length for freeat work. I believe that these are stronger than the motorcycle links.my 2c worth-=Ian=-________________________________________________________________________________

Subject: Pietenpol-List: ShacklesPieters,Followed the messages last week or before pertaining to shackles. I agree that those catalog pieces ARE priced as if gold. Joe C gave me this solution for the shackles. Go to West Marine or Home Depot or any store of that type and look for 1/2 in eye straps in the cable department. They look like the sign of omega. Vice the round part and bend the two legs straight down. You now have a shackle, stainless steel with a hole for your pin. And they don't cost an arm and a leg. About 75c each but you have to buy two. These are the ONLY shackles in my entire PietCorky in La spraying last coat of Brush tomorrow, Poly Spray on Thursday.________________________________________________________________________________
