Subject: Pietenpol-List: Ash substitutesHey everyone...good quality ash is hard to find in this part of Florida.I managed to get enough for my landing gears cross struts but now I'mfaced with the cross member for the motor mount. Great quality oak isvery easy to get but I don't even see it listed in my aircraft books. Iknow it's heavy but it is a small piece. Is oak unacceptable for somereason besides weight????? Thanks in advance. Ed G.________________________________________________________________________________Date: Wed, 5 Sep 2001 07:09:38 -0700 (PDT)

Subject: Pietenpol-List: Ash substitutesHi Ed,Ash was specified because of its excellent shock absorbing qualities (the samereason it is used for baseball bats and parallel bars in sports equipment). Italso has the nice quality of never splintering, and sanding up nice and smooth. If you will notice, the places where BHP specified ash all have either shockloading or vibration or both. I would do whatever you can to find ash. Youcan order it from the internet if you can't find it locally.Good luck,Jack Phillips> > Hey everyone...good quality ash is hard to find in this part of Florida.> I managed to get enough for my landing gears cross struts but now I'm> faced with the cross member for the motor mount. Ash is a good choice wood for its strength, my opinion. Doug Bryant Wichita Ks________________________________________________________________________________

I found my ash at a local lumber yard that specializes in fine woods, andcaters to cabinetmakers and woodworkers, rather than the constructionindustry. I would recommend staying with ash because of its properties, plus it is a very nice wood to work with. You might also try a woodworker'ssupply store, they usually carry unusual wood types, or can order it for youfrom their suppliers. In our area, these are Rockler's, or WoodcraftSupply. Their links are:
www.rockler.comwww.woodcraft.comI know that Woodcraft has stores in Tampa and Orlando, and they sell Ash ontheir website so they must carry it locally. It looks like there may be atypo on the Web Site, where the length is given in inches rather than feet.Might be worth a call.Good luck,Al Swansonswans071(at)tc.umn.eduLong Fuselage, 1929 Model A engineFuselage, Ribs, Landing Gear, Tail Wheel finished, working on the TailSection>> Hey everyone...good quality ash is hard to find in this part of Florida.> I managed to get enough for my landing gears cross struts but now I'm> faced with the cross member for the motor mount.
