A more complete answer.Casein glue is made from dehydrated milk curds which have been ground to awhite or cream colored powder. It was first introduced during the WWI era. While the strength of a glue bond of any kind of glue depends on thematerial, fit of the joint, cleanliness of the surface, the pressureapplied, atmospheric conditions, etc., casein glue develops a bond capableof withstanding a shear stress well over 250 lbs. per square inch.Although this glue is often called waterproof, this is not strictly correct. It is, rather, water-resistant and the strength of the glue in a wet sheartest is still over 125 lbs. per square inch after being soaked on cold waterfor 48 hours.Casein glue is a cold water glue, meaning that it is mixed for use with coldwater (70 degrees F) and can be applied to cold lumber with equally goodeffects. These two items add greatly to the convenience of the glue. Thefact that a very small quantity can be mixed at one time, and that it doesnot have to be used immediately, and that unmixed powder can be kept over along period of time, if kept away from moisture, makes casein glue a veryeconomical glue. The required drying time is somewhat greater than otherglues, taking 24 to 48 hours to dry completely, but can be worked safelyafter having been in clamps for 12 hours. All of the above came from the book "Aircraft Maintenance" by Brimm &Boggess (1940). Having said all of this, I doubt any of us could find anyreal casein glue today. The Weldwood plastic resin powdered glue has all ofthe same qualities but is even more water resistant. That is what I useexclusively because it is cheap and incredibly easy to work. The very ideaof using a glue because it has "gap filling qualities" makes me scaredbecause the fit between the parts should be better than that.As an aside, the wings and tail of my 1928 Travel Air are all made withcasein glue that is 74 years old now. During the restoration I found thejoints completely sound, and I fly aerobatics regularly with it with noadverse effects that I have found on any inspection.Gene Rambotalking wayyy too muchand not working enough on the Piet________________________________________________________________________________Date: Sat, 12 Jan 2002 10:15:53 -0800Subject: Pietenpol-List: [ Gerry Yarrish ] : New Email List Photo Share Available!

Hello, low 'n' slow fliers; Those of you running Corvairs or other setups with an electrical system available can make a smoke system that is pretty nifty, using auto windshield washer tank and pump. As a matter of fact, even without an electrical system you can install a simple, dedicated electrically-operated smoke system this way like the Kansas City Dawn Patrol guys did, at
http://www.kcdawnpatrol.com/smoke.htm It's a bit easier than hand-pumping the old fertilizer sprayer. Just hit the "pickle switch" on your control stick and you're making smoke. It's a real shame that the 9-11 thing took some of the fun out of flying activities. As Mike Cuy said about laying down a little bit of smoke these days, you risk being turned in to the Al-Qaida police if you try this at the wrong place or time.Oscar ZunigaSan Antonio, TXmailto: taildrags(at)hotmail.comwebsite at

I'm setting up my Piet for the Model-A which I already have sitting in its' mounts. All structure is finished and the fabric is on the tailfeathers, ailerons and the bottom of the left wing. The more I talk to Mark Langford, the more interested I get in the Corvair engine. I may change enginesafter a couple of years experience with the Ford. I've ordered Wm. Wynne's expensive little book. I am particularly interested right now in where the engineCG winds up with the engine outfitted just as you have it. I think Wm. Wynne's Piet was one of the best looking Piets I've seen. If you get over in this direction, give me a call so I can give you directions to my house...It's realeasy. It will help build better planes, as much as anything. I sure wish I could have made it down there. I like the spring type, split axlesuspension better, as opposed to the bunji chords. The only drawback that I can see, is if your springs aren't strong enough, ya gotta get another set somewhere, probably custom made.I also noticed the last pic of your progress, you said the axles are 18" aft of the firewall. The plans call out 17" for this dimension. Kirk,You wanted some input so here goes.I beveled the edges of the 1 inch top piece and the two side pieces (straps)by tilting the table 45 degrees on a 1 inch belt sander. I cut 1 inch squaretubing from ACE hardware into four 7 inch pieces and drilled the 1/4 inchholes for the bottom three holes and bolted the two pieces to the squaretube. I put a 1/4" bolt and nut in the hole next to the top and tightened itjust enough to hold the 1" top piece in place. It took a MIG welder lessthan10 minutes to weld the four. This is really a easy procedure and Iwould bet some other Piet builder even has a better procedure. Think abouthow much more resistance to elongated holes exists when this fitting is onepiece as designed.Lynn KnollWichita----- Original Message -----
