I'm sure you will get a couple of views on this. I waited till they were onthe spar and all work was done. Having said that, next time I'll just dipthem. I took many hours of sitting on a stool getting into all of thosecracks to get coverage. I'm about ready to start building ribs for #2.Dick----- Original Message -----

Folks-I have half my ribs built & just varnished one for my son for Christmas. What a job! My question is...can I varnish them prior to assembling themon the spars, or do they need to be left naked soas to glue them to thespars, then varnished in assembly? If they can be varnished first I candip them and save a bundle of work.ThanksJeff LorimorJeff,The ribs should not be glued onto the spars, just nailed (and contrary towhat the plans say, the nails should should go through the uprights into theface of the spar, not through the capstrips, according to AC43.13). If youglue the ribs to the spar, you may have trouble trammeling the wing to getit straight.I'm not sure I would dip them though, I think that would tend to put anawfully heavy coat of varnish on them. I brushed mine, with the first coatthinned about 50% so it would penetrate the wood better, then brushed asecond coat on at full strength. If you plan to cover with PolyFiber, besure your varnish is compatible with their chemicals, or plan on putting acoat of their epoxy varnish (about $50 a qt.) on the capstrips so yourvarnish doesn't bleed into the fabric finish.Jack________________________________________________________________________________Date: Fri, 28 Dec 2001 09:16:32 -0500
