Dick,I have an external on the belly. Have a King KX99. Tried the VOR once tosee how it works. Never use it. I suppose it would be a backup if the GPSgave out. Costs about $100 more for the VOR.There is a 24" square plate of aluminum on the inside of the belly for aground plane. Have lots of range.
