I'm about to rig my axle the way Michael Cuy did using a bolt protruding downwardfrom the axle through a tube to prevent the axle from rolling and as a safetycatch in case of a failed bungie. I would like to use a couple of long hardenedsteel 5/16" bolts. I have two questions. Are the 5/16" bolts too skinnyfor the job? And, which would be best - welding the bolts to the bottom ofthe axle or just drilling clean through the axle and securing the bolt with nuts?I'm afraid that a weld would just break under pressure and, on the otherhand, that drilling a 5/16" hole though my axle would weaken the axle. Hi Dave,I used the pins like Mike did. I used the same dimensions he did - 1/2"tube. I drilled the hole through the axle and inserted the tube throughboth holes, then welded it top and bottom. I believe the collars use 3/4"tube for the 1/2" guide pins to slide in. I'll have to measure them to besure. They might be 5/8".Jack-----Original Message-----
