Folks:An other appeal to the collective knowledge of the list.In order to remove the prop hub safety shaft from my Corvair crank, I am insearch of a second nut for the Bernard Pietenpol installed safety shaft forthe Corvair. This is to the best of my figuring a 1 inch 18 TPI nut asmeasured with a thread gauge. (the WW version is a 1" x 14 tpi) If anyonehas any clue as to a source for one I'd be grateful. As usual the answer I seek is so obvious it I am blind to it.In reading the Pietenpol Building Manual in the section regarding theconversion of the Corvair.Bernard writes:"The center bolt is 1" thick wall tubing 5 1/2 long threaded on both ends 18threads per inch. The nut must be specially made as the standard is 14threads per inch."In recent email from Don Pietenpol regarding the removal of the safety shafthe suggested; "drill a 1/4 inch hole near the front of bolt put a drill rodin to make a T handle and turn it out".a blindingly obvious solution to a simple problem.the good news is that the machine shop believes that the crank I have can besaved as it has never been machined. The nut is a spindle nut for a front wheel of a car. But be sure that the machine shop radiuses the journals correctly (very important) and then have it ion nitrided.----- Original Message -----
