Chuck, I'm sorry to hear about the burglary. I know you must feel violated. As a police officer for 9 years I can tell you that frequently the burglar, though not a friend, knows the victim. You can help the police by making a list of people that know that you have those tools or people that have knowledge of your shop. Have you had any work done on your house lately or know anyone that is having financial difficulty? This is where I would look. I don't know how much your property was worth but, if you have a " Crime Stoppers" program or place a cash reward in the paper sometimes this generates leads. Whenever I purchase something I copy the make, model, and serial number onto the receipt and place it in my safe. I then go through the house and garage every year and video tape things for the insurance company. That's kept at my in-laws house. Finally, Wal-Mart sells a simple surveillance camera that hooks into a VCR for $37 (maybe more where you are). The video is pretty clear for the price. Place the camera inside your home. Point it out the window in the direction of your shop, cars, or front door, etc... Purchase a 12 hour tape and hit record every night before you go to bed and let it run. This works great because policeman are usually on a first name basis with most of the local, pardon my slang, "scum-bag" burglars. So, if you can get them on video you just may get your stuff back if they were to strike again.
