Had a great day at the hangar today. Pulled the airplane out and started the engine right up, using starting tips posted to this list by Edwin Johnson and Gordon Bowen. Thanks, guys.Still running rich but it starts, idles, runs up, mags both work and RPM drops clean on mag check, carb heat seems to work great, and maybe next time I'll try a static runup if I can get the mixture worked out. It feels real strong.I have it up on a stand right now (thanks for the tip, Chuck Gantzer!) and have removed the landing gear legs to sandblast, prime, and paint them. Brakes and wheels will be cleaned and overhauled, new brake lines down the gear legs. While it's up on the stand I'm also going to do the fabric repairs to the belly. With any luck at all, the airplane will be back on its gear and ready for the wings at the end of Memorial Day weekend. One bit of cloudy news... around noon today my hangar mate Randy Stout went down in an oat field near Temple, TX while on his way to the Zenith factory open house in Mexico, Missouri in his CH601. He's pretty sure the crank broke on the Corvair engine... he hadn't nitrided the crank. Nobody was hurt, only minor damage to the airplane, and tomorrow a retrieval party from EAA Chapter 35 is headed up with a trailer and tools to bring the airplane back home. Randy had already started preparing another crank for nitriding and was going to change it out... this will accelerate the process.Oscar ZunigaSan Antonio, TXmailto: taildrags(at)hotmail.comwebsite at http://www.flysquirrel.net________________________________________________________________________________
