Pietenpol-List: inter-cylinder baffles

I finally got around to taking a couple of photos of the small baffles that are used on the underside of the cylinders on small Continentals. I put them on a webpage along with the drawing of how they are made, at http://www.flysquirrel.net/piets/baffle.html and for scaling the layout, the drawing shows a grid of 1" squares.A similar setup is required on VWs and Corvairs as "cooling tin".Oscar ZunigaSan Antonio, TXmailto: taildrags(at)hotmail.comwebsite at http://www.flysquirrel.net________________________________________________________________________________Date: Fri, 2 Jun 2006 21:15:54 +0000 (GMT)

Hey all,During some great visits with Gardiner (Thanks my friend for you and yourlovely wife's southern hospitality!), Jeff and Terry, the subject ofinter-cylinder baffling came up.As I've mentioned, I was hoping not to have to use cooling eyebrows, but mywinter cht temps were too high so I just finished installing some eyebrows.Do I need to also install some baffling between the cylinders? I don'tthink cubs have any, and I think most of the installations I've seen atBrodhead don't, but I could be wrong.Would appreciate your input.ThanksDouwe________________________________________________________________________________Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: inter-cylinder baffles

Douwe,I originally did not include the inter-cylinder baffles on my A65. When Ihad a stuck piston ring, I sent an email to Harry Fenton, who is the "guru"for small Continentals. He asked if I had the baffles, and when I said no,he said that every case he's seen of stuck piston rings was due to highcylinder head temps, and invariably there was no baffling. He stronglyrecommended I add them, which I have done. I think I still have thedrawings he sent me showing how to do it. I'll look for them and send themto you.Jack PhillipsNX899JPSmith Mountain Lake, Virginia _____

Subject: RE: Pietenpol-List: inter-cylinder bafflesI'd concur Dowe with Jack and Harry Fenton. I believe the Bingelis books show diagrams or sketches of those bafflesand they aren't hard to make up of scrap aluminum, springs, and a piece of welding rod or wire.I have a set in my airport desk drawer that I have to reinstall this spring. Thanks for the reminder. Tom,Great article. Sounds like you have it under control. It is fun to scrounge forparts. That is how we built my plane. There was no aircraft spruce backin the day. Anyway, Contact me at the email address below and I will give youmy dads email address. He may have some of the engine parts you require. Hehas a lot of cont. stuff. I just finished making a set for a O-300. Wish I had had these dimensionsbefore I started because I was copying a poorly homemade set that wasalready on this engine. They looked like they were hit by a truck, but atleast they are shiny now. LOLBarry DavisNX973BP

Yes, Douwe- isn't Gardiner's wife just a peach? Very elegant lady, and so nice. They were kind enough to care for a Ford Ranger pickup that I bought in Atlantafor a couple of weeks until I could go retrieve it. Such nice folks. When Scout had the A65 on it, there were no intercylinder baffles on it and I didn'tgive it a second thought. However, I began to hear (and read) more aboutthem and their importance to cooling the full perimeter of the cylinders sowhen I swapped from the 65 to the 75, I installed some. The ones on my engineare right out of Wag-Aero (I believe), and come as a small kit with four aluminumpieces, a couple of bent stiff wire pieces, and a couple of springs to holdthe baffles in place. Pretty simple stuff, and I can certainly see what theydo to route cooling air from the eyebrows on top, down between and under thejugs. You can easily make the parts using the information that Mikee and othershave posted here, or you can make them from the patterns that Tony Bingelisincludes in his books. I'm sure a picture will be worth more than thousandsof keystrokes, so maybe someone will post pictures of how the baffles actuallyappear when they are in place. I may be out at the hangar this weekend myself, and the cowlings are off of my engine, so I'll try to get some pix when I'mthere if I remember.--------Oscar ZunigaMedford, ORAir Camper NX41CC "Scout"A75 powerRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: George in Australia

I have never been to Brodhead, but I attended the west coast gathering 2 summers ago when I was working in California temporarily. They are a fantastic bunch of folks and you will make some great friends. ---For those friends of mine, I have parts cut out for 15 ribs so far and waiting on a delivery of T88 to get started. The cadets in Civil air patrol are wanting to get the chance to help assemble a few pieces.KellyRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... 9#395419le, List Admin.________________________________________________________________________________Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: Once around the patch

Picture is worth a thousand words, I guess. Here's a pic showing my vertical stabilizeroffset (about 1/2") and another showing the washers on the top two enginemount points. This doesn't say much because everybody seems to be makingtheir mounts differently, but the point is that downthrust and offset to theright really helped Scout get to a nearly hands- and feet-off cruise trim condition.--------Oscar ZunigaMedford, ORAir Camper NX41CC "Scout"A75 powerRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ttachments: http://forums.matronics.com//files/img_ ... ______Date: Sat, 2 Mar 2013 16:44:11 -0800 (PST)

Gary, that video got me excited enough to finally figure out how to watch you tube videos on my TV. Then it was on to watching Dan flying out of Poplar Grove. The rest of the evening has been spent watching You Tube videos of Brodhead.
