Hi to all,My name is Ray Olson and I live in Marietta, Ga (20miles north of Atlanta).I sold my Sonex last Dec. It was mostly complete, needing only some enginetuning, several other minor items and an airworthiness inspection. I am nota pilot and that may not change.I am finding that after building an airplane, building bird houses and other suchprojects just doesn't cut it. I monitored the Pietenpol list before I started mySonexand I have been back on the list for about two months. I think a Pietenpol wouldcertainly be a building challenge and would teach me a whole lot about buildingairplanes that I did not encounter with the Sonex. As like the usual newbie,I have some questions and would appreciate any input the members of the listwould care to make.1. Since the construction of a Pietenpol is pretty labor intensive, can a builderconstruct a quality airframe and sell it it for at least the value of the materialsused?(remember I am not a pilot).2. Is there a proven source of spruce, other than Wicks and AS&S. I have done business with both and have no complaints. Janet Shumaker at Wicks was very good.3. I would like to attend Brodhead this year with my Grandson. I understand thegathering at Brodhead is 20 and 21 July (Fri and Sat). Is there a source of informationabout events during these two days.4. I understand that the Grega plans are no longer available. I actually have a set ofhis original plans ($25.00). Plan number 2459. So a set from the Pietenpol familyis in order. However, is the GN-1 a "better" version? I sure hope this does notstarta fight. What other books or written material on Pietenpol construction is appropriate.(I have or will get the EAA materials on building wooden airplanes). Thanks to all.Hi to all,My name is Ray Olson and I live in Marietta, Ga (20miles north of Atlanta).I sold my Sonex last Dec. As we have noted here in the past, good clear douglas fir is an acceptable substitute for sitka. I have just finished cutting up all the stock for a new fuselage for the project we will build at Sun n Fun. ( more on that later ) I bought clear 1/4 sawn fir in 1x8x16' lenghts at $1.29 per foot. Compare that to sitka. Huge savings for a bit heavier wood, but stronger, if you don't mind the painful slivers.Dick N.________________________________________________________________________________

I just received my order of DF.Rough cut 50x100mm x 5.4m lengths @ $17.50 per metre.Thats quite a lot more than you pay in the States, but thats theprice of building in Australia.Still quite a lot cheaper than Spruce!JohnWPerth, Western Australia---- Original Message ----

finally heard back from Bob Grega today via email. He does not want the GN-1 plans distributed in any way shape or form. So I guess for now at least it looks like the GN-1 may fall by the wayside since plans are currently unavailable and no telling when or if they ever will be.To those who are looking for GN-1 plans... I guess just try to see if anyone who bought a set and has not decided to build from them may sell them to you... or go the authentic route and get Pietenpol plans.DJ________________________________________________________________________________Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: New prospectuve builder

Ray - I live in Conyers and also had an interest in both GN-1 and the Pete. I wassurprised to see from DJ Vegh's post that the GN-1 is not currently available. But I'll tell you what one fellow told me. I was asking him about the differences, and how I was confused about which way to go, and he finally asked me,"Do you want advice from someone who has built and flown both the Pete and theGN-1?" I said, "Sure!" (I didn't know he'd done both.} He suggested the following:1. Build the Pietenpol. 2. Build it out of wood. and 3. Build the longfuselage version. On someone else's advice, I actually bought GN-1 AND Pietenpol plans. The reasonbeing, they are similar enough that the Grega plans (and I have the new CADdrawings) can sometimes add clarity to the Pete plans. That may be blasphemy, but it works for me. Also, check with a couple of the EAA chapters west of Atlanta---Carrolton, or Villa Rica, or ??? I don't remember which one, but one ofthem has 4,5, or 6 guys all building Petes and they should be done about now.I know some of them at least were hoping to fly to Brodhead this summer.--------Larry MRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... __________
