Fellow Pieters,I had my first "Pietenpol as a Chick Magnet" experience yesterday. First of all,I'm happily married, 44, have 3 kids and am NOT looking to pick up women, but yesterday........I had taxi'ed to the north end of the field, where there is a BBQ place next doorwith a deck that provides a nice view of the runway. I'm on the far side ofthe field, about 200' from the deck. Didn't notice anyone out there when I passedby. Stopped to do the runup/mag checks/ etc, and suddenly there's a handon my shoulder and a voice yelling in my ear "Take me up! Take me up!". Reallytook me by surprise, as I always look around before doing the runup to makesure nobody has taxi'ed up behind me. Pulled the throttle back to idle, andtried to explain to the attractive-lady-about-my-age-or-younger that I had 96lbs fuel onboard and we would be over gross weight, not to mention that thefront cockpit headset was back home in the hanger and a step-stool is neededto get in. She replied "We don't have to talk!" "Take me up!". Once again I triedto explain weight & balance to someone with no idea what I was talking about, but I did promise to do it some other time with less fuel, a headset, preflight briefing, etc. Never saw this person before in my life.My biggest fear was my wife, who was shopping, was due back about the time I plannedto return to the field. Not sure if she'd believe this story if I was tellingher after she had seen me helping an attractive lady de-plane from thefront 'pit with much assistance :-)Never had a car that attracted women, and the old BMW motorcycle is decidely un-coolto most, but the Piet is a definite Chick Magnet!Dave MordecaiPanacea, FLNX520SF________________________________________________________________________________Date: Wed, 10 Oct 2007 19:19:40 -0700 (PDT)

Don't put so much fuel in next time.2. Always have the other headset with you.3. A girl that say she doesn't need to talk (before or after) is worth investigating.4. If your wife catches you, tell her that the passenger's husband bought her aride. Carry $50 cash in your pocket at all times.5. Good luck! Now I can't wait until mine is done.MJD--------Piet-builder-who-hopes-to-be-flying-next-summerRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: Adhesives article

Yep, Cab-o-sil is the brand name for fumed silica and what I was recommending as a thixo agent. The canard-pusher composites folks have been using cotton flox or cabosil for about 35 years making any of the Rutan type designs. Anytime you have an adhesive not holding on a vertical bond, just a pinch of cabosil or cotton flox really adds holding power without too much bulking. The standard procedure for composites "gluing" applications is to bulk-up (the glass ballons weight a heck of a lot less than pure epoxy adhesive) with glass microballons then add just a pinch of thixo to get it to hold in place. There's also some reinforcing additives like short chopped fiberglass, or kevlar flox that is used to improve the strength of the adhesive. All these additives are available in the composites materials section of the AirSpruce catalog.Gordon----- Original Message -----

All the structural adhesives I used to make used fine silica asstructural filler (obviously where density was less of a concern for the applicationsat hand) with fumed silica as thixotoping agent, or in lower percentagesas anti-settling agent for the fillers. Plus rubber modifers and reactivediluents. We generally used aliphatic amine curatives, but the average homebuilderisn't weighing adhesives on a digital scale, or wanting to put up with theammonia blast when you open the curative container (a good way to wake up fastin the middle of a long day)! But these were killer adhesive systems.--------Piet-builder-who-hopes-to-be-flying-next-summerRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... __________
