To:Pietenpol List Subject: Pietenpol-List: more Brodhead dreamin'I had the charts and plotter out again tonight, looking at routes, distances, times, fuel stops to Brodhead. The first day would still be the same no matterwhat... two long legs from San Antonio to Shreveport and overnight at Corky's.That will be Wednesday, July 23rd.Thursday would be four legs, a bit over 500 statute miles, from Shreveport to LittleRock/Poplar Bluff/Mt. Vernon, Illinois. Mt. Vernon is where the annualKR Gathering has been held in the past and is not a definite overnight but somewherein that area because I know they are airplane-friendly.Friday the 25th would be in two legs from Mt. Vernon to the Peoria area and onto Brodhead, putting me on the field sometime around noon on the opening day ofthe fly-in. I would get settled in and enjoy Brodhead on Friday afternoon,Saturday, Saturday night, and plan to leave sometime before noon Sunday, July27th.Return flight would probably be more direct but similar route and stops. I knowby that time I will be playing the part of the tired pre-WWII Army Air Forcetrainee, my airplane safely tied down at the field and the warm engine stillticking as it cools off on that Monday July 28. The evening would find me slouchedin the nearest pub somewhere around Peoria, my leather jacket open and gogglespushed back on my head, white scarf hanging limp, and me downing some coldbrews and ordering a round on the house to celebrate my 57th birthday thatday. Tired, sunburned, saddle-sore, but still enjoying the stick and rudderevery time the tires leave the ground as we head home.I figure 2400 statute miles round trip, 4 gal./hr. at $4.50/gallon means I'd payabout $720 for avgas for the trip. Talk about a "$100 hamburger"... plus fivedays vacation time from work ;o) I guess a Pietenpoler has to make the flightat least once in a lifetime or his Piet will forever be restless in its spirit.Oscar ZunigaAir Camper NX41CCSan Antonio, TXmailto: taildrags(at)hotmail.comwebsite at http://www.flysquirrel.net________________________________________________________________________________Subject: RE: Pietenpol-List: more Brodhead dreamin'Date: Fri, 9 May 2008 08:11:30 -0500

I did in in three days pretty easy, but I had good weather. That will be the key for you. If you have good weather and a solid plane, you'll make it without problems. On day two of my trip I flew about 8 hours, somewhere around 500 miles. It wasn't bad, I just walked a little funny when I got out. Being 27 years old helped though. That's funny, I smiled reading your story. I've got a similar one.Last summer, my dad called me on a Friday afternoon and asked if i'd like to gowith him to St Louis and fly back in a plane that he bought on eBay. He saidit was a Rans Coyote II and the owner said it cruises 95mph. So we left Lovefield at 4:00am Monday on SW. 1hr 45min there. We rode with the owner aboutan hour west to a little airport on the MO river. We hopped in this tiny littlething and took off at about noon, no radio, gyro, intercom, or ear plugs.First thing is that a rotax 582 is wicked loud. I had a cleanex so we quarteredit and stuffed it in our ears. We then realized that the cabin heat door wouldnot stay closed. I pulled a piece of loose thread from the velcro on oneof the wiring harness covers and tied the cable in the closed position. Gigglingthe whole time of course. We were watching our fuel consumption and it hadused almost the entire left tank up without even touching the right. Only whenI found an airport to divert to and changed my heading did it start to usefuel from the right tank. In 5 minutes gravity balanced the two tanks and wereboth showing half full. Our first leg was the longest and our first stop wasof course the airport that dad couldn't get on the phone, and they didn't havefuel. There was a fellow who was there and showed me on the chart that fayettevillewas the closest place that had fuel, 30 miles away, just at the limitof the spec. Range for the ac. There we got fuel, two bags of chips, and gloriousearplugs. We made our next stop in OK event free and then on to midlothianTX. We got there about 30min after sunset, which was good since we hadno nav or landing lights. 510 nautical miles in 8hrs and 38min. Did I say thatthe 95 cruise is actually 65! I did get a pic of the air speed indicator at95, in a steep dive. My dad tells people about it all the time. He says it was the best day that hecan remember. He looks to me hoping for the same reply. I just say, the longerago it gets, the more fun it was.Jeremy in Dallas, TXSent via BlackBerry from T-Mobile-----Original Message-----

Great story Jeremy, sounds like a fun trip. I've spent a little time at Fayetteville and Midlothian. I used to live in the DFW area, did most of my flight training at Grayson County, and at Denton. If you are looking for a good group of local pilots, check out www.dfwpilots.com sometime. There are some good people there, a lot of them are good friends of mine.Steve RuseNorman, Ok----- Original Message -----
