Interesting points you guys are bringing up. A cleaner plane wouldn't necessarilyhave a higher stall speed, as there are different types of drag, weight figuresin, and so forth. However if you look at articles on improving a plane byreducing its drag, they indicate you can improve top speeds by about 15 mph, improve economy a bit (on an older style plane circa 1920's-30's) and that a sideeffect is usually the landing speed/stall speed going up along with the highercruise speed. Why would I want a stall speed lower than 30? Same reasons given, better controlat low speed, larger safe operating speed range, possibly shorter takeoff roll, ability to clean an obstacle quicker. (Those things the VG selling guys claim.)Safety might be better if it meant when things went terribly wrong you were atthe slower speed, however that is doubtful, since there are so many ways to getin trouble. The VG's I was thinking of were the 100 for $100 inexpensive ones, and it was mostlythoughts of S.T.O.L. performance dancing in my head, that prompted me toask if anyone had tried them. Most piets in my opinion are not going to have great performance on take offs,as their power to weight ratio isn't that great. I have flown a 65 hp champ thatgot off the ground quick, but it didn't compare well with the 85 hp cub weused to have, and that paled next to 150hp super cubs, the three planes differingprimarily in raw horse power. I would suspect the 100hp piets climb out muchbetter than 65hp ones and those climb better than the model A ones.If you watch some of the clips on the landshorter website (the one with the inexpensivevortex generators), it can make you want something that could fly likethose planes.Losing some of my weight and flying light with no passenger would probably accomplishmore than I would ever need around here. The aerial specs have it's takeoff roll as 250 feet and stall around 30knots/35mph. That is pretty short/slowfor any plane, but if it would be slower/shorter/safer and possibly more fun,I might consider trying them out.JimRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: wood gear progress

Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: wood gear progressCarson, excellent work there! I love those rims! Are they Lexan or something? J/K. Actually the photos you posted were very helpful to me. I am notbuilding a Piet, but have been wondering how the straight axle set up works. Does the axle simply "lay" in the "V" of the steel plate connecting the wooden legs? I know the bungees go in there too, but I always wondered about what attachments there was between the axle and the rest of that structure....Boyce________________________________________________________________________________

BoyceAs far as I understand the axle just sits there in the vee I have put a piece ofpipe on the inside of the bracket to stop the axle from turning and will puta safety cable incase the bungee fails, nothing new I'm just copying off othersbefore me.CarsonRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: Re: wood gear progress

I was considering a spring on the mount that would act as a shock absorber in lieuof bungees. Not quite certain about the compression tension and spring sizethat I will need which I suspect will be able to absorb 2gs upon touchdown underharsh landingRight now just ideas and considerations. I do expect to begin playing around withthe mock up to see how it all fits togetherJohn------Original Message------
