Well 90% complete anyway. I want to thank all the guys who helped assemble my wings at Sun n Fun, Dick, PF, Don, Art, Jim, John, Randy, ED, and Bill Rewey for advise. Built the ribs1990, built the spars 1994, and the aileron spars sometime in between. Cut theL/E, T/E, and struts early April and hulled everything from W Virginia to Lakeland. We assembled all the pieces at the wood shop tent. The trailer tongue broketwice, once on the way down and also on the way back, no damage and now Ihave two wings hanging in the hangar. Still have to add the butt ribs and a couplestruts before I varnish the wings and hang up again and get back the thefuse. What a blast, just 18 years from rib jig to assembled wings ;)Skip P.S.Tried to send this message in early May, but have been having trouble sendingemail.skipgadd(at)earthlink.netEarthLink Revolves Around You.________________________________________________________________________________Date: Tue, 26 May 2009 09:55:25 -0700Subject: Pietenpol-List: Steve Raddatz Died. :(

That is sad news. I never met the guy, but I do remember his name for makingsome very unflattering comments about Pietenpols to the (non-aviation) newsmedia at the last SNF. I'm sure he didn't mean it quite the way it waspresented, but it's a good object lesson for us all on how eventongue-in-cheek comments are so often spun by the media to portray aviationin the most negative light possible.---------------http://www.theledger.com/article/200904 ... nPublished: Monday, April 20, 2009 at 12:01 a.m.Last Modified: Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at 1:06 a.m.LAKELANDFor Stave Raddatz, building a kit plane has become second nature.Raddatz, 41, has built 22 so far, including a helicopter, a Sonex, a HarmonRocket and a Pietenpol Air Camper. Why the name Air Camper? Raddatz smiles. "If you take off and leave theflight pattern, you're camping. You'll never make it home."The latest home-built job for Raddatz, from Muscle Shoals, Ala., is hisVan's RV 10, a four-seater that travels 200 mph. He just finished the planeand didn't have time to paint it before the Fly-In. "I'll paint it after theshow," he said.Raddatz has gotten so smooth as a plane maker that it took just three monthsto build the RV 10.His hobby of building planes fits. Comes in at 285lbs, thats without water pump, prop, prop hub, radiator, manifold, exhaust or carburetor. Bit on the heavy side, even with the better performancethan the Model A ford engine, I don't think I can use it unless I want tobuild the Piet as a single seater. Well, good news and bad news...Good news is Lowell is fine, bad news is my plane is pretty smashed up.After some high speed runs and fiddling, Lowell popped her up and whencoming down got caught by a pretty good surprise gust which got him crookedon touchdown, initiating a fairly mild groundloop. Unfortunately, whatwould have been a minor groundloop turned into major disaster due to aninconveniently placed three foot deep muddy drainage ditch off the side ofthe runway. This smashed the gear, smashed the prop, displaced the wingforward and flipped her on her back.Considering the whallop she took in the ditch, we are grateful that Lowellgot away with nothing more than some bucked shins. (thank God for the toughshoulder harness I installed, please do this everybody)Got a crane, put her in the hanger, had lunch and went home. I'll go backin a few days once the reality sets in and I stop crying, take stock and tryto figure out if I have the "gumption" left to rebuild her.Learned a lot about building practices from seeing what gave way and whatheld up. Interesting note, the wood struts and cabanes came through intact.I really don't know what else to say at this point...Douwe________________________________________________________________________________Date: Sun, 4 Apr 2010 16:17:23 -0700 (PDT)

I'm so sorry that this happened. Both you and Lowell must feel pretty bad. That shoulder harness sounds like a goodie. It might be worth posting a photo of it to aid builders who haven't yet gotten that far.I hope that the rebuilding goes quickly. It sure is a beautiful airplane.David Paule> Well, good news and bad news...________________________________________________________________________________

Douwe, I'm so sorry to hear this. The only thing worse would be if Lowellhad gotten hurt (I'm sure he feels worse than you do about it).I can relate more than most on this list, since I went through a forcedlanding and groundloop that damaged my Pietenpol severely, after I had onlyput 5 hours on it. I can tell you that, while building the Pietenpol wasfun, REBUILDING it was sheer work. It took me 8 months to get mine back inflying shape and for that 8 months I had to pretty much just whip myself togo down in the basement and work on it. However, the end result was worththe effort and by the next summer I flew it to Brodhead, then on to OSHwhere I won an outstanding workmanship award ( I wonder how many previouslywrecked airplanes can claim that distinction?). One thing I can say is thatnow that you know what you're doing with woodwork and fabric work, you willbe surprised how much faster the work can go than when you did it for thefirst time.Buy a copy of AC-43.13, which is the FAA's bible for repairing damagedaircraft. You CAN make this airplane as good as new, trust me.My advice to you is to have a good cry, hug Marcie, buy a bottle of reallygood single malt scotch and get good and drunk. Hug Marcie again. Then getup in the morning, assess the damage and lay out a plan for rebuilding it.If you need some help, let me know. I'm retired and have an RV-4 that canget me to Brodhead in 4 hours, so I can come help if you need it.Kindest regards,Jack PhillipsNX899JPRaleigh, NC-----Original Message-----

You knew I'd chime in, of course. I've been downthat road myself. I sent Corky payment for 41CCon June 4, 2004 but wasn't able to make my firstflight in the airplane until February 4, 2007...nearly 3 years later. I spent quite a bit ofthat time rebuilding and repairing the airplaneafter the nose-over and resulting damage, Ilearned a lot, enjoyed all of the experienceexcept for the thirty seconds on the phone whenCharlie called me from out in the brush tellingme he'd bent the airplane, and the sixty secondsit took for me to look the damaged airplane overwhen I finally got to see it, all banged up.There was never a doubt that I'd make the repairsand fly it. And it sure is fun to fly a Piet! That's the carrot. Some people who experiencea crunch just never recover and decide to walkaway. That thought never entered my mind... Icouldn't bear to leave a perfectly good, woundedPiet to someone else's hands to repair. You get up, dust yourself off, and make a listof things that need attention. Later you refinethe list to things that affect airworthiness andthings that are mostly cosmetic, then you startworking on the list. I still have the list thatI made less than an hour after I first saw mybanged-up bird. The paper is grimy and smudged, but each item is now lined through or checked off...Oscar ZunigaAir Camper NX41CCSan Antonio, TXmailto: taildrags(at)hotmail.comwebsite at http://www.flysquirrel.net ________________________________________________________________________________

Douwe, This is not the way I intended to inform the group I'll be selling my Piet. Three weeks ago, during a routine check-up, I was found to have (what their calling) a rare, non-treatable cancer. Well guess what, I'M NOT GIVING UP!! I WILL BEAT IT! I refuse to just lay down and give up all my dreams and everything I've worked so hard for.Douwe, if you give up and don't repair the damage, you don't deserve to own or fly a Piet.Gene In beautiful TennesseeN502R> >> Well, good news and bad news...>> Good news is Lowell is fine, bad news is my plane is pretty smashed up.>> After some high speed runs and fiddling, Lowell popped her up and when> coming down got caught by a pretty good surprise gust which got him > crooked> on touchdown, initiating a fairly mild groundloop. Hi GangI have acquired a full set of Piet ribs built by, I believe, Charlie Rubek. Theyare not new by any means but look to be serviceable. The only thing is thatthe spar spacing is 30 inches. I haven't measured carefully but it looks asif the rear spar was moved back so the ailerons would be slightly undersized. Will take more careful measurements if needed. If anyone wants or needs them,I can bring them to SunnFun. I'm asking the exact price I paid which was 1(one) handshake. They have a lovely patina and would make excellent displaypieces if you didn't want to use them for real. If anyone is interested, letme know. I'll post pics if I can before SnF.Dave AldrichRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: Douwe's piet...:(

Man, is this a "bad news" thread or what?.Here I was, feeling sorry for myself that, for the first time in eight years, Iwould not be able to attend Brodhead this summer (due to family commitments). My disappointment pales in comparison to what others are suffering through today.I'll stop whining now.First off, that must have been incredibly disappointing, Douwe. But, as you say,the good news is that no one was hurt. Keep in mind Jack's story of overcominga very similar mishap, and then going on to be awarded a prize for outstandingworkmanship at Oshkosh. When you do get everything put back together, makesure you don't use any stainless steel wool pads for carb heat. And Dan, there are few things more aggravating than having to "fix" something thatwasn't quite finished yet. Kind of like that first "ding" in a new car.And finally, Gene. What can I say other than all of our thoughts are with you asyou begin your battle. Your attitude will be your strongest asset. Hang in there.Bill C.Read this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: Douwe's piet...:(Date: Mon, 05 Apr 2010 12:52:41 -0400

Michael, I just reread my post and I guess your right, I was a little heavy handed. I didn't intend it that way, I was just trying to let Douwe know that bad things do happen but if we don't give up, good things can happen. If you give up, then only bad happens. I apologize to Douwe and everyone else if I came across wrong. It's so easy to give up and sometimes so hard to go on. I'm just not a quitter and would hate to see someone like Douwe, who has worked so hard, give up. In my mind, it would be much more cruel to Douwe if we all just told him how bad we felt for him and let him give up, than if we were to motivate him to move forward. Sometimes we all need a kick in the butt, at least I do.My Apologies to all I offended, no cruelness intendedGeneN502R ----- Original Message -----

I've used Resorcinol on some of the laminated pieces. I measure it by weight usinga beam balance scale that was confiscated from some drug dealers in Da UP,courtesy of ex-wife II who worked for the US Attorney's office. Not quite amarkle considering the cost of the divorce but not bad. Yogurt cups work as mixing cups too and will stand up with an acid brush in them.Again, almost a markle.Maybe someday I'll actually make it.Read this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ______Date: Sat, 10 Apr 2010 19:35:11 -0500 (GMT-05:00)

Well, it looks like I will have to sell my Piet project instead of moving it toTennessee. Sad day, but I will move my jigs and will keep the plans. I just can'tafford to store it here, and we could use the money for moving expenses. The project is located in Fresno CA.It is a framed fuse with the side door modification. I made the fuse 2" deeperat the rear seat (I'm 6'4" tall and wanted to sit a bit deeper in the fuse), 2"wider from the nose to the rear seat, and 2" longer at the firewall to compensatesome for the lighter Corvair motor. It has 2 coats of varnish over most of the fuse (underneath some of the strutsit will need varnish) so another coat and you're ready to start mounting metal!I thought I had pics of it in it's current configuration, but I don't. It isin storage in Fresno, and currently I'm in TN.I built it well, as I planned on putting my life in it's rear seat one day.Speaking of metal, the control sticks, and rudder pedal assemblies are made andready to mount when the varnish is completed.Looking for $500, and it's worth it. I will keep the plans for when I start hereon version 2!I need to move on this pretty quick, so if you're interested, contact me below.I plan to be moved and settled before the end of the year...Mark Roberts615-487-9784Read this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: West Coast Piet Project for Sale :(

Thanks Gary! You know too well what junk I've been through in Fresno with stinkingJob layoffs! I had to get out of CA, and this Nashville job popped up andseemed to be divine intervention. Until today I have maintained that I was movingthe project. But, I have had to look at it like I was talking to Dave Ramsey, the financial guy on the radio... the cost and the storage (not having agarage here or workshop) would quickly eat up the eventual replacement cost tojust rebuild it.So... (sniff) it's available to someone that will finish her. Better if they areslightly oversized like me :DRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: West Coast Piet Project for Sale :(

Thanks for the positive comments/feedback - it really helps....OK, so I dont really want to make a list or have a schedule (that would feel toomuch like WORK) but......I have remaining (in no particular order): build a fuel tank from scratch, buildan oil tank from scratch, build the wing struts, build the jury struts andall connections, build the aileron horns, revise the ailerons to piano hinges, complete the landing-gear/springs structure, add brackets to hold the brake calipersin position on the landing-gear legs, complete the secondary structurefor the center section, complete the internal bracing in the wings, build thesheet-metal engine cowling(!), get upholstery done for the two seats, purchase/installthe engine instruments & XPDR & COM, do all the engine accessory installations(!),complete the tail-wheel assembly mounts, get the wheel rims drilledto match the hubs & have the wheel assemblies powder coated and then spoke-laced,wire/plumb all the instruments, have "Applied Finishing" in Seattle sand-blastand paint the fuselage truss, build the windscreens, build/install thethrottle quadrant, create the VOR and ELT antenna mounts, have "Columbia Airmotive"make the remaining control cables, make the control cables for the wingbracing, create and run all the fuel systems, complete the wiring, order thepropeller from ROTEC, cover the structure, paint the airplane, and then I shouldbe fairly close!--------Jake Schultz - curator,Newport Way Air Museum (OK, it's just my home)Read this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: Re: the Eagle

Here's yet another opportunity to gently and patiently educate one of our publicservants and employees (FAA person). As frustrating as it is to encounter ignorance, error, confusion, or misinformation in the agency that is supposed topromote and regulate civil aviation, there is much more to be gained by gettingthe correct information right out of the regulations or advisory circularsand then discussing it with our employees in the FAA.But I'll admit, sometimes you just want to whack 'em upside the head.--------Oscar ZunigaMedford, ORAir Camper NX41CC "Scout"A75 powerRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: West Coast Piet Project for Sale :(

Mark,I am going to lay down a bit of a challenge. It would be easy to let your dream kind of slide and allow yourself to let yourproject go. Ask guys that sold their projects if they are glad that they did,and I think most would say that, in retrospect, they wish they had not. The littlebit of money was not worth the setback. You have a place to store your fuselage. Make the effort to get it to NAS Danford(Tool's house and hangar). It probably will be a pain to lug the project acrosscountry. But think of the story you can tell once you have it flying. Youwill in the long run be glad that you did. If your plans and desires change lateron, sell it then. But do not let it go - yet.My advice - and only worth what you paid for it. Best wishes in the move and thenew job.--------Semper Fi,Terry HandAthens, GARead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ______Date: Sun, 07 Dec 2014 17:10:12 -0500

Yesterday my brother in law sent me this picture of a plane that "looks likethe one you are building". I wasn't to surprise when it turns out thepicture is of Scott Liefeld in his Pietenpol because my brother in law andScott both live in Sothern California. Then he mentions they are inFlagstaff. Wait a minute, Flagstaff! That's like 400 miles from Scott's homeairport. That's 400 miles away from home in a Pietenpol in December. Nottoo shabby Scott.
