Hi everyone, first of all, let me introduce myself. My name is Rodrigo Oliveira and I'm from Minas Gerais - Brazil. Together with my father, Jose, I'm about to start a Piet project. Plans already here.I've been following the list for a while now, quite anxious for an opportunity to contribute, but soon I realized that none of my skills available at the moment were of use, specially because I haven't started yet.But than, here and there, messages mentioning Sun n Fun are popping , and it got me all happy cos I'm actually making it up there this year. The show itself would be a dream come true already, but since me and my Dad have this project now, it's going to be just amazing to meet some of you guys there, and maybe see a real Piet "live". Dad is coming with me, but he speaks no english at all, so patience will be welcome :)Anyway, just wanted to say hi and come out of the shadows.Cheers from the south,RodrigoPiet plans purchasedSun N Fun, almost there! ________________________________________________________________________________Date: Mon, 15 Feb 2010 22:15:01 -0500

Rodrigo,Welcome! You & your Dad will have a great time building a Piet! Here's some free advice, though: First thing to do is go to Netflix.com andrent a copy of, "The Great Waldo Pepper." That way you will be able tocommunicate with all the fellow Pietenpol builders and flyers that you meetalong the way...Seriously, this is a great group and you are at the right place to learn allyou need. Once you get started you may even get a visit from The Great JimMarkle!Gary BootheCool, Ca.PietenpolWW Corvair Conversion, mountedTail done, Fuselage on gear(18 ribs down.)-----Original Message-----

I think I caused more confusion than necessary with my "why use them at all" comment.I was being a little sarcastic. I understand the purpose and the need for the cables. I'm not really too hungup on the whole thing, I just haven't been able to find any definite answer onhow tight these things should be. Yes, I have read all the replies here, andI do appreciate all the input. I've also read several other threads that havebasically ended in the same conclusion, which is... there are several differenttechniques and a wide range of tensions that will obviously work. I alsospoke to several experienced builders/technical advisors last night at our EAAmeeting. None of them seemed to think that what I had done was necessarily wrong,or dangerous. The consensus was that I should have all the cables tautwhile maintaining the squareness of the wing. How taut? Again, that was up fordebate... no one knew for sure. Given all of the input here, and from my discussions last night, I think I'll backmy turnbuckles off a bit. I agree that there is no reason to apply excessivetension on the cables, this is just where I ended up using the "twang" method.I fully agree that some amount of tension (it will be my secret) is adequatefor these cables to do their job and keep "drag" and "anit-drag" from distortingmy airfoil. Agreed? Thanks again for all the input. On to the next piece of the puzzle. :)--------Mark - working on wingsRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: Cable Tensiometer and G Note

Great, Rodrigo! I'll be at Sun 'n' Fun Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and ifthe weather is good enough I'll fly my Pietenpol down. The usual gatheringplace for Pietenpol enthusiasts is the wood-working tent where you will meetsuch folks as Dick Navratil and PF Beck. They are usually there just aboutall day, every day. The rest of us come and go, but always check in acouple of times a day with them.Have you thought about what engine you will use on yours?Jack PhillipsNX899JPRaleigh, NC-----Original Message-----
