Depends on your engine. William Wynn suggests that for the corvair 3.5" x 9" isa little too big. In his manual he says this is what he has on his Piet butwould make them 25% smaller if doing it again as it runs a little too cool. Ifyou are using a C65 then I would look at a J-3 or an old Aeronca and copy whatthey used. These planes would be about the same speed as the Piet and wouldhave similar cooling. I second Rick's recommendation of Kroil. Great stuff, I use it frequently whendoing gunsmithing on old guns with years of accumulated rust and crud. Can bea bit hard to find locally, my second choice for a penetrating oil would bePB Blaster, available in the automotive section at WalMart. This stuff also worksgreat on rusty nuts and bolts, though it smells a lot worse than Kroil does.--------Billy McCaskillUrbana, ILtail section almost done, starting on ribs soonRead this topic online here:

Finally got the radiator mounted and plumbed. Everything is running smoothly. Ihave just over 4 hours on it the engine now. What are some of you (that are runningradiators) seeing for temps? I have two temp probes, one in the cylinderhead and one in the lower water pipe. After a full minutes run at full throttle(1850rpm'sat 85deg ambient) I have a delta of 70 degrees between upper andlower probes. I think I need to push the water thru the radiator faster.....?

Do the "ring" test and then send it to Moldex up in Dearborn. They'll magnafluxit, nitride it, and thread the end for the safety shaft. Wynne has been veryhappy with their record of doing things right and as of this past spring, theywere the only guys he recommends. Mine came back from them ready to install.Cost me $325 plus shipping and it's a thing of beauty and a joy forever.DaveRead this topic online here:

Douwe,You can just let some of the airbox sit outside the cowling. It doesn'tseem to mess up the lines too much. It looks terrible when the cowling isunpainted, but tends to disappear once the plane is finished.Look at what mine looked like before and after paint:Perhaps it helps to paint the cowling a dark color, but I find the airboxhanging down just doesn't draw the eye to it. If you look closely, you cansee that the base of the carburetor (where the airbox attaches) is below theline of the cowling, so even if you moved the airbox, you would still havethe SCAT hose showing there, and in the picture above, the SCAT hose is muchmore distracting to the eye than the whole airbox.Of course, mine is an A65 and I believe you are using an O-200, but I don'tthink they are much different in this regard.I think adding a length of SCAT hose between the air filter and thecarburetor would add an unnecessary restriction to the engine airflow, andreduce power.Jack PhillipsNX899JPRaleigh, NC _____
