Depends on your engine. William Wynn suggests that for the corvair 3.5" x 9" isa little too big. In his manual he says this is what he has on his Piet butwould make them 25% smaller if doing it again as it runs a little too cool. Ifyou are using a C65 then I would look at a J-3 or an old Aeronca and copy whatthey used. These planes would be about the same speed as the Piet and wouldhave similar cooling. Do the "ring" test and then send it to Moldex up in Dearborn. They'll magnafluxit, nitride it, and thread the end for the safety shaft. Wynne has been veryhappy with their record of doing things right and as of this past spring, theywere the only guys he recommends. It looks terrible when the cowling isunpainted, but tends to disappear once the plane is finished.Look at what mine looked like before and after paint:Perhaps it helps to paint the cowling a dark color, but I find the airboxhanging down just doesn't draw the eye to it.
