It would definitely raise the service ceiling, and increase the performance ifyou fly anywhere the density altitude is higher. The excess horsepower won'tmake a big difference in cruise in anything except fuel consumption, but it willmake a difference in take off and climb performance, especially at heavierweights.--------HOMEBUILDERWill WORK for SpruceLong flights, smooth air, and soft landings,GliderMike, aka Mike GlasgowRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ___Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: Lycoming 0290 for Piet ?

This is from the 1988 Operator's Manual 60297-9O-290-D = 260 lbO-290-D2A, D2C = 264 lbO-290-D2B = 265 lbAccording to the F&G the "A" weighs 244 lb. Addradiator, plumbing and water and you're likely looking at 260 plus lb. So, you guys with A's, how much doesthat stuff actually weigh?I have both a "D" and a "D2". The difference is 6.5:1 compression ratio on the D and 7.5:1 on the D2. D D2TO hp 130 140TO rpm 2800 2800Rated hp 125 135Rated rpm 2600 2600 With this kind of power you can balance the rpm/hpto the performance you want, lower rpm, lower hpthus lower fuel burn. The approximate rule of thumbis 0.5 lb of fuel per hp per hour. 2000 rpm on a D2gives 60 hp. 60 x 0.5 = 30lb/hr. 30lb= 5 gal/hr.The D, at 2025 rpm, should burn 5 gal/hr. So runninga prop that will cruise at your desired speed at theserpm will trade off to lesser takeoff and climb performancethan these engines are capable of. So the question is, is this tradeoff acceptable to you in your circumstance?Buy the damn engine!!! :-)Clif"Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we oftmight win, by fearing to attempt."....... William Shakespeare I have found a local, 0 time since factory remanufacture Lycoming 0290 (125hp) cheap. It is complete. When I say cheap I am talking less than a Covair project. This seems an excessive amount of horsepower for a Piet. Best I can determine this model 0290 weighs 240lb dry. That is not much different than a model =93A=94 from a weigh perspective. Does anyone know of a successful Piet flying with a 0290? The owner is going to list it Monday so I must act quickly. All thoughts welcome. Thanks, Don________________________________________________________________________________

I have a O-290 D2 for another project. I was told it will produce 140 hp . You better check into that further. It seems like a bit much for a Piet.Dick N. ----- Original Message -----

For the split gear, main V's the plans call for 1 3/8" 14 gauge 1020 steeltube, I believe that equates to .083 wall thickness. With 4130 should Iincrease to .095 or could is be decreased to .065 safely? Thanks,JackDSMThe Keeper of the List. ________________________________________________________________________________Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: Split Landing Gear Question

I would err on the side of strength and safety and use the .095" wall tubing. You probably would only add a pound or less to the overall weight. Landing gearmalfunctions are reputed to be highly over-rated, at least according to AxelPurtee... Perhaps we should post a sticky or FAQ thread with the source for the plans? Thisquestion seems to come up a lot lately. Anybody know how to do this?--------Billy McCaskillUrbana, ILtail section almost done, starting on ribs soonRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ______Date: Tue, 31 Aug 2010 19:16:10 -0600Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: Re: Split Landing Gear Question
