Hi John,I believe some have cut access doors in that rear panel, but it providesshear strength, and should therefore be glued.Gary Boothe Cool, Ca. Pietenpol WW Corvair Conversion, Running! Tail done, Fuselage on gear (23 ribs down.) _____

Hi Douwe,My safety cables are set up to allow about 3" of travel. I also have nuts on the end of my anti-axle rotation tubes for redundancy. How are you going to pad the loop?Dan HelsperPoplar Grove, IL.-----Original Message-----

Oscar is the one who hooked me. Don, I'm sticking with the wood gear, but I had to rebuild the wheels andaxle because of the damage. While I was at it, I used the same basic brakedesign (a drum brake, inside the wire wheel, which I'm gonna cover this timeround) except moved up from go-cart brakes to golf cart brakes, which aremuch better quality and larger, though I'm sure they still won't hold thosebig wheels. The only other thing I'm changing is my anti-rotation set upand changing to a travel limiting arched tube rather than a cable, as I'veread about a cable swage giving way on one when someone's bungees broke.I'll try to get some photos this week, once I get the airbox back on thecarb.Douwe________________________________________________________________________________

John, as Gary mentioned, the seats provide just about the only shear bracingin the entire fuselage (the firewall is the only other bracing). Mike Cuymade an access panel in his rear seatback, but as I recall he left theperimeter of the seatback intact and cut out an opening for access. Otherpeople (myself included) have provided an access panel under the belly toallow access to the elevator bellcrank area.If you used enough screws to attach the seat back it would probably provideenough strength, but I found the rear seatback to be too far forward of thebellcrank to really allow easy access. I put the panel between the twobottom stringers that I added, spanning between the rear seat bulkhead andthe next cross piece in the fuselage as shown in the picture below:This area is then covered with a sheet of .025" aluminum. A total of 18screws hold the panel in place. It comes off every year for the ConditionInspection, to allow inspection and lubrication of the bellcrank area.Jack PhillipsNX899JP "Icarus Plummet"Raleigh, NC _____

Patrick,You are at exactly right place!! And good for you & your dad! This time lastyear I carved my own prop, which you can see at www.westcoastpiet.com. Iused the prop carving information available from Dan Helsper,helspersew(at)aol.com, who also carved his prop for a Model A powered Piet, anddid an excellent job of cataloguing it. P.F. Beck is also an excellentresource, pfbeck(at)bellsouth.net, as he carved his prop for a Corvair poweredPiet (and didn't even break the crank once, yet). My prop-carving project took about 40 hrs of work. Good luck to you, anddon't forget to send The List pictures of your project and progress!!Gary Boothe Cool, Ca. I am currently routing a copper primer line from the rear cockpit to theleft intake. This is 1/8" tubing. Can anyone tell me if a flexible joiningbetween fuselage and engine is required, as with fuel lines?Gary Boothe Cool, Ca. Pietenpol WW Corvair Conversion, Running! Gary I have never seen anything other than the metal line. I would not tie it downvery close to the engine. The flex in your mounts might fatigue the line.If it breaks in flight should not be a problem just a real small vacuum leak.It would have some effect on the idle.--------Jerry Dotson59 Daniel Johnson RdBaker, FL 32531Started building NX510JD July, 2009wing, tailfeathers done, fuselage rollingusing Lycoming O-235Read this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ______Date: Mon, 17 Jan 2011 15:30:32 -0600
