Pietenpol-List: wing length

If I was starting over, I'd lengthen the wings in some fashion, either awider center section or slightly longer wing panels.Mainly because I've seen a couple fly like that and they perform markedlybetter on hot days with passengers. However, I must say that "RE-PIET" flies just fine with standard wings, andshe's heavy. However, there's a big motor up there swinging a bit prop. One interesting observation flying a fairly heavy Piet is that she reallyhandles the crosswinds nicely.Douwe________________________________________________________________________________

Okay good people.Have flown RE-PIET now for five hours and thought I'd make an early pilotreport. My darn GPS wouldn't turn on the first non-wind day I had, which was the dayI had planned to get some accurate speeds.gotta love electronics. I have awind vane airspeed indicator which isn't super accurate so I need somethingextra. She SEEMS to cruise at 70 at 2300.My favorite cruise condition is 2000, indicating around 60. Nice and quietand she'll still climb, though slowly.Power off stalls are nice and gentle. Have no idea of the speed, the windvane indicator reads zero.Power on stall is more like a mushing descent, it's hard to get a realbreak. She just hangs there like a Fokker D-7 with her nose in the air.She turns on a dime! After reading all the landing advice and watching hundres of landings overthe last decade, I was prepared for a rather pronounced sink rate once I cutthe engine. So the first few landings, I cut it closer than with the cubjust to be prepared for the steep descent. and each time found myselffloating across the runway longer than the cub! This is on 75 degree dayson grass. She seems to float more than the cub I was flying, strange. Ican't explain it because she's heavy, but maybe the wing axle fairing ishelping a bit? Or the large airfoil wing tank? Who knows. So far she lands easier than the Cub, as it's really easy to decide when tostop her flying and because of that, you actually have more control of whenthings happen. She lands very easily. Yesterday was a no wind day and Iwas set up on final, coming right down at my aiming point and doingabsolutely nothing with the controls thinking "shouldn't I be doingsomething"? felt weird as she just took care of herself until the roundout.Haven't tried best climb yet, need to get the gps fixed. I know I got500fpm on the gps a few times, but have to experiment more.LIKES:Like the whole plane, she is delightful to fly.REALLY like the elevator servo trim system, VERY handy.Like the control placements for carb heat and mixture, on the left, underthe control panel. Easy to reach but hard to see.Like the starter.Large wheels make taxiing over rough stuff pretty easy.Small tailwheel, makes the tail lighter.Nice having a powerful engine, I mainly cruise around now at 2000-2200 soshe's sipping fuel like a smaller engine, but it's sure nice to have thatpower on climbout or just for fun.Smoking is fun!!!!!DISLIKES:Really would tilt back the pilots bulkhead a few degrees. Thank GOD I'msmallish.Have to figure something out for the fuel indicating system. My fuelindicator doesn't start reading until about five gallons which makes itkind of hard to keep track of things. I'm considering a small drop downtube type indicator in the back drain bung where I have my water drain. This could let me have accurate readings for probably the last six or sevengallons. We'll see.Small tailwheel. is lighter, but I'm sure I'll have to replace it regularlybecause it spins so fast. I have a bag of ten from McMaster Carr, takesthree minutes to change. Have to keep those plexi windscreens clean or I can't see anything forwardwhen landing into a setting sun. Note to self!Need to add longer "down pipes" to my long exhaust to direct the smoke frommy smoke system away from the fuse and tail more. That stuff is yucky toclean.GPS is at Garmin now and I'll get some accurate numbers as soon as possible. So keep building, try to touch it every day, try to hit Brodhead as often aspossible for ideas and motivation and then. keep building, DO NOT STOP andone day you will be looking at a finished aircraft, ready to fly. Ipromise!!THE ONLY TRICK IS TO NOT QUIT!!Who's flying up to Brodhead next year who I could hook up with? Should be agaggle heading north and I want to tag along.Douwe________________________________________________________________________________Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: RE-PIET flying characteristics

I plan to go. Let's link up somewhere and arrive in style. Should have HJack and Matt with me. Speaking of flying characteristics, I flew my GN-1 yesterday after annual and new9/16" offset of vertical stab. I think is does help a little bit w/the offset.I should have gone for atleast an inch. I put a trim tab back on, but it'sbetter than no offset. I tossed in the new 406 ELT so that I can travel morethan 25 miles from home drome... $588 from Aircraft Spruce..not too shabby..Larryhttp://

Subject: Pietenpol-List: ELT?Hmmmm....I never did install an ELT. My inspector never said anything about itand I never spentthe money on it. $588 for an ELT from Aircraft Spruce? Wow am I out of touch. ________________________________________________________________________________Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: RE-PIET flying characteristics

Douwe great report thanks! Do you have any pictures of your trim install. I plan to do it. What size servo did you use? Thanks!Sent from my iPadJack TextorOn Oct 26, 2012, at 8:23 AM, "Douwe Blumberg" wrote:> Okay good people> > Have flown RE-PIET now for five hours and thought I=99d make an early pilot report.> > My darn GPS wouldn=99t turn on the first non-wind day I had, which was the day I had planned to get some accurate speedsgotta love electronics. yeah..My AI cleared me to fly after the annual w/in 25 miles of airport until Iget an ELT. A bit overkill, but I decided to just get the new 406-type and bedone w/it. LarryRead this topic online here:
