Subject: RE: Pietenpol-List: Attatching ribs to spar?Fred-- there are lots of ways to do this but I preferred to glue and nail the ribsto my spars---not required but it gave me assurancethat they weren't going to move around. Technically after you tighten your dragand anti-drag cables the ribs should not be ableto move anywhere and some guys have done it like this without glue or nails butfor me I just wanted a dab of glue and two nails, nothing fancy but enough to satisfy me. I know the weather in PA isn't conducive to this right now but I ended up sprayingmy wing with diluted spar varnish (mineral spirits to thin) on a set of sawhorses on a limestone driveway back when I built my plane and thatworked like a charm. I used a Hudson spray containeror bug sprayer like you'd find at a garden department and I think it was a 1.5,2.0 gallon plastic one. The varnish gets in all the nooks andcranies and you have to flip the wing over of course a time or two while dryingso you minimize drips but overall it was a great, fast, and easyway to do the job. I ended up using Helmsman Quick Dry spar urethane from Lowe'sor Home Depot and thinned a bit more with mineralspirits so it would spray well. It took three sessions to get the wing coatedlike I wanted with some finish sanding around the edges and wingrib top and bottoms where the fabric was going to lay so the little porcupine bristlesof the wood fibers didn't show. Gary,You just stated my reason more power than it needs. I'm going with a 65 Connie I was going to use the AeroVee 80 hp but it doesn't have the torque of the 65. Speed is in the wing and 70 is fast enough for me I don't need to burn 7 gph when I can fly at 3.7 gph.I'll try to upload pictures later on. Thanks for your input look forward to learning all I can.JeffSent from my iPadOn Oct 30, 2012, at 5:45 PM, "Gary Boothe" wrote:> Welcome Jeff! Hey all,I have to make a second fuel gauge that will read the last eight gallons orso, so I'm not always having to guesstimate. So for those of you making (ormodifying) a wing tank and looking for a drop down fuel gauge set up, ckthis out.In my search I found these brass site gauges at Mcmaster Carr (go to ventedoil level indicators, then you'll see some straight ones) and they are socool I thought I should post them. Lots of guys over the years havemodified ACS versions or made their own, but these are almost ready to goand very professional looking, and not expensive. All one needs to do is plug the vent hole at the bottom, make up a littlefloat/wire set up and you're ready to go. They come in most NPT so they'llfit fuel tank bungs. I got one and it's all shiny brass and real glass.really nice. I'm getting a shorter one and modifying the base to accept acurtis drain valve since that's where I drain water from my tank.http://www.mcmaster.com/#liquid-level-g ... ___Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: new to the forum
