Hello good Piet-ple,Thought I'd post a couple images of my project. Most of the progress lately hasbeen with the "walking beam - bellcrank assembly) for the elevator in the aftsection of the fuselage. I moved the whole assembly up several inches so thecables will not rub on the elevator. My design follows others who have used externalbellcranks for the elevator - looks older and the geometry works betteras the bellcrank on the inside can be perpendicular to the pulley behind theseat at the same time as the external bellcranks can be parallel to the elevatorhorns.Having a fine time.....--------Jake Schultz - curator,Newport Way Air Museum (OK, it's just my home)Read this topic online here:

Folks=3BI was getting down to the last dozen or so of the run of brass data plates that I had made up some years back=2C and wondering if there was still enough interest in them for me to order another run. About that time=2C Gerry Holland sent me some pictures of the cooling eyebrows on his Junior Ace and we began discussing some small=2C decorative=2C oval brass plates that might set off the polished aluminum of the eyebrows. That led me to explore having some smaller plates made with an "Air Camper" logo on them=2C just to add interest to our airplanes. Perhaps one mounted to the top center of the firewall=2C or in the front cockpit=2C or on the sides of the cockpit below the coaming=2C wherever. So I have good news and bad news. The good news is that I decided that based on my present health and circumstances=2C I may live long enough to sell another run of the brass data plates so I've got more on their way. Certainly we can see from the growing number of superb Air Camper completions each year that the marque is in no danger of fading away!!! The other good news is that I commissioned Denny Demeter at AvGrafix to create the smaller brass plates for me as well=2C and I have a run of those coming. I have not seen them yet (just the artwork proof)=2C but Denny assures me that they are suitable for mounting on the exterior of our airplanes and they will endure the rigors. I was concerned about thin graphic appliques on brass peeling off=2C but these are etched and should last quite well. Denny squeezed my order in after completing a run of huge vinyl graphics for a bunch of C-130 Hercs=2C so if he can put his work on those big dawgs=2C our little 65MPH piddlers should pose no problems! The bad news is that costs have crept up as time has marched on=2C and I'm going to have to increase the selling price for both the data plates and the new=2C slightly smaller logo plates. They will be sold for $12 USD each=2C postage paid to anywhere in the known universe. They will also still be free to anyone who gives me a ride in their Piet. And since I'm often given to lapses of good sense and confused ideas of economic reality=2C I would probably discount the cost to anyone who ordered a set of three (large dataplate plus two smaller oval logo plates=2C one for each side or each cockpit=2C or whatever). And if offered a good beer=2C I would just hand over a brass plate=2C pay for the beer=2C and go away happy =3Bo)I do not have the new plates yet so I'm not taking orders for them. I will post pictures when I get the new plates=2C and I'll be mounting one or two of them on Scout in a few weeks when I get the airplane home. I think I'll also try to contact Brian D'Amato to see if he still offers his nifty black-on-aluminum plates that I copied to create the brass ones. I hope so=2C because I like options and I'm sure all of you do as well=2C so I've always shown his plates and ordering info on my webpage too.Hey... maybe I should commission some special black-and-yellow cloisonne plates for the growing gaggle of color scheme copy-cats? =3Bo)Oscar ZunigaMedford=2C OregonAir Camper NX41CC "Scout"A75 power ________________________________________________________________________________Date: Mon, 5 Nov 2012 22:31:15 -0700Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: brass dataplates- update

Oh My! This could have been very, very ugly. It was the SUV's fault, as it rana painted STOP sign on the road.A pilot, landing on his first solo, had his wife video the flight. You know, itis a red letter day in the life of a pilot!Watch the video of the event. The SUV drives right in front of the landing plane.Fortunatly, no one was hurt, but it looks ugly. Took off the nose and rightgear.Sad part is this might keep the pilot from pursuing his dream. It wasn't his fault. He might have been able to power up and go around, but he didn't see thecar, and I am not sure at the altitude he was at when the car first came intoview that he even COULD have seen the car due to the angles involved... It mighthave been in his blind spot, I don't know.Regardless, both are very lucky no one was killed, much less hurt. Have a look:

The published glide path is 4.5 degrees. It's in the AFD. I am not an expert in the regs as they relate to airport operations, so I don't know if there is any reason why a pilot couldn't drag it in low and set down once at the DT. It would seem like a bad option at that field, but not a problem at many other airports, at least until the engine quits. I was always taught to keep within gliding range of the runway in the pattern. If I came in too high, I could slip it in.It's my opinion (we all know about opinions), that the 4.5 deg GP and displaced threshold are there to help prevent situations like this from happening. My question is would the published GP and DT have prevented this accident? Also, did the pilot follow these procedures? It doesn't look like it, but I'm only able to watch the video. None of us were in the cockpit. My observations are just observations. The NTSB report should answer all of our questions. This is a good discussion.Wayne BresslerTaildraggers, Inc.

Subject: Pietenpol-List: Cessna hits carA buddy flies his Bonanza from this airport and gave first aid to the car occupants. He provided some background details. Others have provided observations.Pilot was a student on his cross country. Runway has a displaced threshold. The road only has STOP painted on the road, No sign. and no "watch for low flyingaircraft" sign. There is a hillock and some trees that can obscure a plane coming in to land. The road is owned by the neighbor and the runway by the airport (that last partshould be obvious.)The airport and neighbors have been "contentious" for years. Most everyone is "lawyered up" so the truth may never be known. Local news are all making editorial comments. Other observations from the beech list:The pilot has stated that he saw the car stop, however he lost awareness afterthat. The pilot was as cool as a cucumber. When the plane stopped he calmly undid hisseatbelt and got out. Driviers don't know how to look for landing planes. ________________________________________________________________________________Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: First engine run today! NX898H

Well, thanks to Dewey Davenport, I had my first Pietenpol adventure today!!He's built a beautiful 1700' strip and zeppelin-sized hangar about 20minutes from where RE-PIET is living, and he's also the proud owner of abeautiful Pietenpol which he purchased this summer. It's one of LarryHarrison's Piets and looks like a beautiful plane. Very simple, superlightweight, one-piece wing etc, very nice straightforward Piet. Not being the daring airman that I am, he didn't really want to brave thecold so he flew down in his Champ to meet me with a few friends. We endedup flying back to his place with two champs and a cub in formation, whichwas just an awesome experience for me. I kept pinching myself thinking"this is what you're dreamed of since you were a kid, and now you're doingit!!!" The coolest thing was to see our four shadows crossing the fieldsas the farmers knock down the old dead corn. We landed, met everyone andwere joined by yet another Cub. Turns out there are about four or fiveprivate strips right around there and it seems to be a little mecca ofgrassrooting. Super nice guys all. We talked Dewey into taking his Piet upfor a photo shoot with them together, then landed and headed home.Prepped better this time. Leather flying suit, with turtle neck and vestAND... Two hand warmers in gloves and chest pockets. Was pretty comfy.Getting the harness on is still hard with all the winter stuff on, but it'sreally like strapping the plane to my back. Before all those festivities though, my instructor asked to take her up andsince I don't get to see her fly I said sure. He is a great pilot and didsome stalls, steep turns etc to ck her out and then while we're chattingaway on the ground we look up and... he's put her into a spin. Our mouthsdropped open as he did about three revolutions and brought her out of it noworse for wear. My heart was truly in my mouth as I had NO idea he wasgoing to do that. Well, I doubt I'd ever have the B----ls to do it myself, but now that it's done, I'm glad to know she spins normally, recovers welland hangs together, though I think I aged about five years watching it. Anyways, it was a great day!! Hoping for a good day next week when I can flyher down to my home airport and stop driving 1.5 hours each way to fly.Got to meet Bob who's building a Corvair Piet just up the road. Got theengine completed and running at Corvair College and is just finishing up theJenny gear. Way to go!!Keep building, it's worth it!!Douwe________________________________________________________________________________Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: My first Pietenpoling adventure!!

Very cool, Douwe. I must say, you're a better man than I am. If someonetook my Pietenpol and spun it without asking first, I'd beat the fool out ofhim when he landed.Good to know it will recover from a spin. Yours is the first modern PietI've heard of being spun. While I enjoy spins in a Cub or Citabria, andhave spun my RV-4, I've never had any inclination to spin my Pietenpol. Istall it farily regularly (besides during every 3-pt. landing), but have notlet it get into a fully developed spin.Jack PhillipsNX899JPSmith Mountain Lake, Virginia-----Original Message-----

Yup, I am glad of that. They have a long runway and I figure that time frame wouldhave put me over the departure end of it. This is a great example of whywe check and recheck our aircraft before flight. I would have also done thesame power test before I flew it. To make sure there were no fuel delivery issuesand to see what the engine would turn on a static run. Kudos to them forfinding it.--------Scott LiefeldFlying N11MS since March 1972Steel TubeC-85-12Wire WheelsBrodhead in 1996Read this topic online here:

Douwe,I have an app on my iPhone, Zephyr Charts. I have sectionals, low and high IFRcharts as well as TACs for North America. I have flown with it and it works well.It is sort of a poor (or cheap) man's Foreflight. The zoom resolution is not as good as the high dollar apps but it is sufficientfor a back up. Couple it with a Bad Elf GPS and you have cheap situational awarenessfor $3.99. There is a Zephyr Lite version (free) that gives you limitedfunctionality to try it.YMMV. Airlion,I also think it was a cooling issue. It does have eyebrows on it. But I don'tthink there is much airflow over the cylinders while it is tied down. The rootof propellers typically don't provide much airflow. You can see the eyebrowsin the pic above. I am 100 miles away from the plane so it is hard for meto get a complete understanding of it without being there. I will certainly havea better look at it when I get down there. I have also request they sendpics to WW for his opinion.Thanks,--------Scott LiefeldFlying N11MS since March 1972Steel TubeC-85-12Wire WheelsBrodhead in 1996Read this topic online here:
