In pic it calls for 5/8x.049 and ream for 7/16. It looks like it would take a 5/8x.095 to be tight enough for a 7/16 bolt. Or is the drawing calling for 2 tubes, one inside the other? Plenty of trouble reading the mount drawing...Thanks,JackDQoNCg0KU2VudCBmcm9tIG15IGlQYWQNCkphY2sgVGV4dG9y________________________________________________________________________________

Jack,The drawing is calling for two tubes, telescoping one inside the other.Note the cross-hatching in the cross-section. It is a drawing conventionthat when the direction of cross-hatching (the little angled lines) changes,it implies that there is a separate part shown. Slip a piece of 1/2" tube (either .035" wall or .049" wall) inside the 5/8"tube and after welding, ream to fit a 7/16" (0.4375") bolt.Jack PhillipsNX899JPSmith Mountain Lake, Virginia-----Original Message-----

JackDo you weld in the 1/2 tube or is this a slip fit so it can be replaced dueto wear?? Why is this not mentioned on the plans? Why would you build itthis way? Is there some reason not use one piece of thicker tubing? Whydidn't Jack T. tell me this before I just ordered the tubing for the enginemount. Now I am depressed and I will have to go watch more TV.ChrisSacramento, CaWestcoastpiet.com-----Original Message-----

Chris,I really don't think it matters if the inner tube is welded to the outertube or not - it is just a "filler", but I would probably weld them together- no reason not to.To be honest, I didn't build mine that way. I bought some 1.75" dia 4130rod stock and had a machine shop turn down the fittings and ream the bore to.4375", then I welded them into the mount. I just found that easier andstronger, since there is no gap between the inner and outer tubes (therebeing but one thick tube), and since the flat washer takes considerable loadI wanted it to be stronger than just a hardware store washer. Here's apicture showing mine in the jig for welding:And a picture of the finished product on the airplane:Hope that helps.Jack PhillipsNX899JPSmith Mountain Lake, Virginia-----Original Message-----

I am in Winnipeg for work and with some time off today I ventured out to visitLyncrest Airport, east of the city. They have two grass strips that are prettywell snow covered this time of year. I saw a few vehicles in front of a hangerso on a whim, I barged on in and introduced myself as a pilot and builder. As it happens, one of the guys there was Adrian with a Pietenpol who posts hereoccasionally as Pineymb. They were gracious enough to let me hang out withthem for a while and shoot the breeze. Adrian has a nice Pietenpol, currentlyon skis. He has a 2-piece wing which is the first one I have ever seen. Theweather was low overcast skies so no one was up flying. I hope to stop backsome day when the weather is better.--------David GallagherZodiac 601 XL-B: flying, 220+ hours nowNext project under construction: Finish my father's AircamperRead this topic online here:

Thanks Jack, sorry Chris, I should have known better! I think I'm going with .095 wall and ream to 7/16. I'm sure I will have plenty more questions. Thanks for the picture Jack!Sent from my iPadJack TextorOn Dec 16, 2012, at 2:25 PM, "Jack Phillips" wrote:> Chris,> > I really don't think it matters if the inner tube is welded to the outer tube or not - it is just a "filler", but I would probably weld them together - no reason not to.> > To be honest, I didn't build mine that way. Jack T.No wonder you're having difficulty with the plans... you've got them upside down.Don't build your motor mount that way.BCRead this topic online here:

Hi All,Speaking of engine mount jigs. I am finished with Don E's nice angle iron jig.Don told me to pass it on when I'm done. Very sturdy jig, for small continental, think it is about 1" longer than plans, puts the top flange 13 3/4" from firewall. Can be picked up in NW West Virginia, by Parkersburg, write me off list.Skip________________________________________________________________________________Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: Motor Mount Questions/Motor Mount Jig available

Tim, the jig is pretty easy to construct with angle iron. Fitting the mountjoints was one of the most difficult parts of the project for me. I builtmine a couple inches long to gain a small amount of space behind the engine. It won't help the CG as much as moving the wing back. If I did it again Iwould pre-bend the side supports (Item 1 on the continental plan sheet) thatsit next to the firewall before welding to the 5/8x 1 inch tube. Willannounce on the list when I'm ready to pass the jig forward.Jack TextorDes Moines, IA-----Original Message-----
