Paul,Ken gave you a great answer to your question. Your front panel could be very deepdepending on your engine and fuel tank layout. I myself don't have any instrumentsin the front of mine. I don't find a need for them and I have triedto keep the plane as light as possible. The heaviest weldments I think you will have are going to be the landing gear attachpoints. Don't forget about the bottom seat frame too. Are you going tobuild the steel tail? They are lighter but I don't know by how much. The plansare on this site somewhere. More on this interesting question! It turns out that the sailplane people usethis type of airspeed indicator as well (venturi operated), and Winter is a well-knownbrand of this instrument. Here's a link:
http://www.winter-instruments.de/english/So here is the problem. I see under Technical Data that the instrument is oneweight if it comes with a "Pitot" and another weight if it comes with a "Venturi".The implication is that the instrument can be used with either a Pitot andStatic configuration, or with a Venturi and Static port. However, the documentdoes not specifically say that, nor does it go into detail about the configurationusing the venturi. it would take some testing to get it properly configured. This is actually an instrument designed for use in a glider or sailplane.Note that a conventional pitot (ram) air airspeed indicator such as the A-066-000from Wag-Aero costs about $130 and is good for up to 120MPH. I'm sure thereare other, equally affordable sources. However, if the writer is set on usingthe vacuum instrument, then carry on!--------Oscar ZunigaMedford, ORAir Camper NX41CC "Scout"A75 powerRead this topic online here:

Man=2C I would certainly like to see an airspeed indicator that operates off a Venturi. I've been flying since 1943 and have never heard of such a device. C> Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: Mitchell airspeed ind.

I wouldn't worry about it at all. In fact the fabric on the belly of the planeprobably sees more heat. Mt landing gear paint is discolored from exhaust heat(not soot). Think of it this way. Fabric planes sit outside in the 110degreedesert for years without fabric issues. If you have some soot on the gearlegs then I would guess that your engine may be idling a little rich or you aretaxing back to the hangar with the carb heat on. The carb heat makes the enginerun rich. My 3 cents, Don't worry about it.--------Scott LiefeldFlying N11MS since March 1972Steel TubeC-85-12Wire WheelsBrodhead in 1996Read this topic online here:
