Tom,If you have the supplemental plans, the side view for the long fuselage shows anadditional "3/4" x 3" filler for strut fitting" directly behind the verticalbrace. By incorporating this filler, the rear cabane attach fitting can be movedaft, eliminating the interference that you were referring to. while theplans do not show it, another filler piece should also be added for the forwardcabane attachment, to keep the spacing of the cabanes at 28 3/4".Bill C.Read this topic online here:

It has been too cold and too snowy the past couple days to make meaningful progresson the Piet. So, while staying warm and dry, I'm thinking ahead to a futuretask. My question is what weight and type of leather (e.g. cow, elk, etc.) is recommendedfor the coamings? Also any recommendations about suppliers of said leather? Thanks, Ken________________________________________________________________________________Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: Leather coamings

There's a reason you find Mexican restaurants, Italian, Chinese, Japanese,French, Moroccan, restaurants but you rarely ever see a Spanish restaurant.Nauga meat may actually be the reason!Jack PhillipsNX899JPSmith Mountain Lake, Virginia _____

I understand that twinkles are made with nauga milk. Hey, they're even the profile shape of coamings. Wow this forum is so enlightening!Sent from my iPhone> On Jan 29, 2014, at 10:20 AM, Ken Bickers wrote:> > Yep, we have a chair covered in Nauga which has been stored in our basement for years and years, maybe decades now. I bought an entire cowhide of top-grain leather, fairly thin and soft (about1/16" thick - I have no idea what grade it was) from B&B Aircraft Supplyfrom Kansas City. They had several of them at OSH several years ago. Itwas probably about 2002. I remember that I paid $110 for it and it wasenough to do both cockpit coamings and upholster both seats, with quite abit left over. I'd give them a call and see what they can do - I'll betthey are cheaper than Tandy.Jack PhillipsNX899JPSmith Mountain Lake, Virginia _____

Ken...One of the nice things about deer hide is you can almost stretch it some to getit looking nice. As long as you wipe it occasionally with mink oil or neetsfootcompound (as you should with all leather) it will last as long as your Piet. You may have the occasional bullet hole to work around though.Check here for some hides. You might have to look past some of the "capes" formounting if that's not your thing...
