Hi Ryan===a year and a half ago I was in touch with a local fellow here inZion, Ill who had a barn filled with "A" blocks..can't remember off hand whoit was but I'll look through my notes this week-end to see if I can locatehis number for you.Grant Mc's comment that there is an "A" block within a few miles of everyoneis true..I located these through a local radio swap-shop program ..A call tothe local Model A club should get the same results.regardsJoeC"R. R. Mueller.....the secret is to just ask questions....you'll be surprised how fast you will find engines. I spotted a model A car in a local parade and asked the owner. He gave me a name who gave me another, who gave me another. I ended up in a barn where there were sixteen blocks on the dirt floor. I got one for $50 and used it for core value on a rebuilt engine from Snyder's Antique Autos. Grant MacLaren was right...they're everywhere. Good Luck.......Don Hicks ________________________________________________________________________________

Ryan; I can supply you with numerous sources for Model A parts, all over thecountry. As you have read here, these Ford A blocks are everywhere....two Ihave were hanger door stops....! You have to get to know the Ford A Clubpeople....they know where they are. You can buy everything for a Ford A andit's engine except for the blocks, not counting the Donovan Racing aluminumitems.......do some noseing around. I have to put together a list ofsuppliers for Richard DeCostas web site. In the meantime, let me know whenyou are ready to get catalogs.Earl Myers-----Original Message-----

within a 2 hour drive of you is Antique Engine Rebuilding, 4835 Louise St,Skokie, Ill 60077,,,847-674-6716.don't know if these are current $s, (they were a year ago) but the $ for a "A"short block rebuilt was $1195. add $125 for core if you don't have one...add$123 for normal Pietenpol modification, (shave pulleys, drill & tap cam, newoiling routes).I was about to have my A block rebuilt here when I came across the A65 I'm goingto use.If you have a block they will pressure test it for you at no cost.JoeCfishin wrote:> Hi Ryan===a year and a half ago I was in touch with a local fellow here in> Zion, Ill who had a barn filled with "A" blocks..can't remember off hand who> it was but I'll look through my notes this week-end to see if I can locate> his number for you.> Grant Mc's comment that there is an "A" block within a few miles of everyone> is true..I located these through a local radio swap-shop program ..A call to> the local Model A club should get the same results.> regards> JoeC>> "R. Pietenpol-List: Model A engines

Subject: Pietenpol-List: Model A enginesSpent some time cleaning on my e-Bay Model A engine today and started disassembling it. Bought a valve spring compressor tool and quickly figured outhow to use and remove the retainers -- but the valves don't want to pop out of theblock. Is this because the stems are crudded up, or is there another set of retainers on top of the spring? A better question to ask you all might be what book do you recommend that has complete disassembly/assembly/overhaul instructions for the Model A engine? I couldn't find any at our local library or even interlibrary loan -- lot's of book available on the car with some info on engines, but nothing I know of devoted strictly to rebuilding the engine...The good news is I have not spotted any cracks in my engine -- yet! Came from near Fargo N.D. Was mounted in a wooden frame complete with radiator, starter, generator and tranny -- was being used as a power take-off or saw millor something...BHP would be proud to see this engine recycled! By selling the non-airplane parts I basically paid for the engine -- shipped the tranny to Houston, TX. The fellow only paid $63 for it on e-Bay, but was willing to pay almost$140 for shipping! The good news for me is that it's out of my garage! The starter and generator went to Michigan; the chrome radiator shell to Tucson andthe radiator (just like new!) went to Stockton, CA. Love that e-Bay! Anyway -- any tips on engine disassembly or a good book would be appreciated. Fred B.La Crosse, WI________________________________________________________________________________

Cruddy stems. If you have the springs and retainer washers off you can clean thestems. Can you push up each valve by turning the crank? The cam should pushthem up. If you have the cam lifters out you can use a brass drift to drive thevalve outs. You will probably want to put in new guides, valves and springwhen you overhaul.Cy Galley - Chair, Emergency Aircraft RepairSafety Programs Editor - TCEAA Sport Pilot ----- Original Message -----

Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: Model A enginesThere is a fellow in Stamford or Anson, Texas that does nothing but rebuild Model A engines (full time) for people all across the USA and as far away as Austrailia. He even pours his own babbit. He was featured a few weeks ago on one of our local TV stations, KTXS-TV I think. For Southern folks wanting to put a Model A engine in their Pietenpol, but not wanting to mess with the engine innerds... this guy might be a good source.I figure if he has and continues to do work for people overseas, he must have a good reputation. If anyone is interested in finding out more about this guy, I'll be happy to do some looking around and try to locate his shop.An experienced A&P I know down here (Minot Piper of Abilene, TX) built and flew his own Pietenpol using a Model A engine. I bet Minot knows the guy in the news report.________________________________________________________________________________Date: Fri, 17 Sep 2004 19:39:48 -0500
