Pietenpol-List: Ferruls

The concern on the "roundness" or "squashed" ferules is starting toget to me a bit.1. The round ones "via Gary Price method" gives a ferule that isextremely tight to place over the two strands. I.e. there is no slop.I went out and looked at them and see that any loads in the wires arein tension only, that is, the ferule is a keeper only. The bent backend tends to compress the ferule on one side only and prevents thewire from pulling loose. I would suspect that bend back is the weakpoint. The ferule after being formed is very solid , tight andunmoving. I am not an engineer and don't see the concern on having theoval, absolutely tight ferule. Can someone explain what I am missing?2. If any one has access to the "Original Piet" can they look and seewhat Bernie used? Round or oval? The next step will be to take the round unit and test tension tofailure. The manual from Don explains that the brace wires should onlybe tensioned enough to allow the tail to be lifted off the ground bylifting on the outer tip. As this load (about 30 pounds) is divided by2, it indicates to me that the wires are only loaded in tension byabout 15 pounds each. The turnbuckles are rated at 2000 pounds. Thewire will be much less than that. The coiled ferule will be muchstronger than the wire.Is this the case of us trying to "over-engineer" the working design?________________________________________________________________________________Date: Wed, 28 Feb 2001 09:10:53 -0800 (PST)
