Hi Everyone, As soon as I told my IA about the Army Surplus (208-529-4555) mags hecalled within one minute and ordered four. He was so enthused I ordered tenmore. How can you beat the price? Even if they are not useable you coulddonate them to an A&P school and take a tax write off. I thought I had posted this, but perhaps I did not. Thanks folks for yourhelp with the timing.I now know how to time the mag. I put it together and put it back in theplane but could get no spark.I am wondering if the new coil is defective. I think it is the correctcoil.(the mag # is 10-51360-26. The coil came from Aircraft Spruce and is#10-357164-1). The coil has two leads, a long one and a short one, onecoming from each side, which I think are the same wire since there is continuity (no resistance)between them. The catalog says "furnished with long and short coil topoints leads" so thismakes sense. It has a square metal bar sticking out of each end that clampsto the mag housing andit has a little brass tab in the center of the coil that the distributorcontact pushes against. My questions are, what do I put my ohmmeter leadsagainst to test the primary and secondary resistances, and what valuesshould I expect. I get 14000 ohm if I connect the meter across the brasstab (distributer lead?) and either of the point leads. I get no reading(infinite resistance) between a point lead and the metal bar (ground?). Ialso get infinite resistance between the brass tab and the metal bar. Idon't know what else to measure. Does this sound like a defective NEW coil?If the coil checks out, is it possible to "bench test" the mag? The pointsopen and close. By the way, The mag worked fine until a couple of weeksago, and the old coil definitely seemed bad (5000 ohmbetween distributer and points, zero between points lead and ground, andplus it was cracked open and oozing resin. I am sure I connected the "pointslead "correctly, ie., to the same place the capacitor connects. Could a badcapacitor cause the mag not to work at all, or does it just cause the pointsto burn. Points look good, by the way, and the old coil was definitely inbad shape, leaking resin and cracked. What else could be wrong. Thanks foryour help. Joe Kohler. Very frustrating, but what else is new. Its all aneducation, isn't it. Hey, my kid just spent about 3 hrs trying to figurewhy the new print cartridge didn't print blue, put in the old one and gotblue. Go figure.________________________________________________________________________________

I taped off the extra point lead with several layers of electrical tape. Iam sure I timed it correctly, and it didn't give a spark when I turned itover by hand or in the plane. How does one test a condenser? Joe Kohler________________________________________________________________________________

I wouldn't assume the new ciol was bad, but I have never known the properresistances to check one. I looked at the AS&S catalog and I see what youmean re: two point wires. What did you do with the extra wire? could itbe touching something? Also, I do not think the mag would work with a badcondensor. Are you sure you timed it right inside? Can't you hand testthe mag before you put it on the engine?----------

Joe: It sounds like you may have some other problem. Did you take thedistributor gear out to make sure the "finger" on it is not broken and thatthe contacts on the block are OK?________________________________________________________________________________Date: Mon, 28 Aug 2000 09:31:00 -0600

Help-Help-Help Just when I think I have it all figured out, something humbles me. This time it'smy magneto. Time to poll the audience.I have a Bendix (scintilla) with an impulse coupling mounted on my "A" per Mr.Pietenpol's plans. On the bench with plugs on the wires, I can turn over the magdrive and watch each plug fire, in order, with each 360 degree rotation. Theimpulse coupler clicks and the next plug fires. I'm onmy way, right? Nope!I put the same mag, wires, plugs et al on the engine and I only get #1 and #3 tofire!! In other words, it fires a plug each 720 degrees so #2 and #4 get skippedeven though the impulse coupler is still working each 360 degrees. Thereis evidence that the same thing occurs when the engine is up to speed as thereis no soot in the corresponding exhaust pipes and no evidence of carbon on theplugs. What gives??The good news is that despite my misgivings about the engine being so tight andwith only half the cylinders firing, IT DOES RUN!!! I'm sure it'sgoing to be a lot easier to start and much smoother running when I can get allfour to light off. Thanks in advance for your inputf"http://explorer.msn.com">http://explorer.msn.com________________________________________________________________________________

Hi Larry glad to hear your engine is turning over smoothly. I know this sounds simple but if you know the mag is working but your firing on only two cylinders you might check your firing order and direction of rotation of the wires in the cap. If the wires were in the cap in the wrong sequence two of the the plugs could be firing on a non- compression stroke such as exhaust. It's worth checking if you haven't already. If the spark plugs aren't sparking then it's in the mag or the wires or plugs. FYI, If you want to keep track of this Parasol group, they have formed a yahoo group at the following address. Not a very active list, but they are piet friendly, whether made from wood or steel, to-plans or modified. They even welcome (gasp) GN-1's. :)Joehttp://groups.yahoo.com/group/ParasolAirplanes>From: "Bob Seibert" >I just got word that there is a "Parasol Airplanes" flyin coming up on>29 June and 1 July. The way I check to make sure that I'm getting fire to a cylinder and myproblem isn't timing or plug wires crossed, is to use a timing light. Youcan connect the timing light to each plug wire and if you get a flash thenthere is fire on the plug. If not then there is either no fire to the plugor the plug is fouled. This helped me a bunch. On none electric startengines, I use a lawn mower 12v battery and hook the timing light up to itnormally. I then tie the ground of the battery to the engine and this makesthe circuit more stable to detect the high voltage field that is in thespark plug wires.Greg________________________________________________________________________________
