I understand that you don't have to have an ELT during the flight restriction time, or after so long as you don't leave your designated area. Beyond that you need an ELT.SteveeOn Friday, May 15, 1998 5:42 AM, Michael D Cuy [SMTP:Michael.D.Cuy(at)lerc.nasa.gov] wrote:> Being too lazy to look up this information myself, does anyone know> what the FAA requires with respect to having an ELT on board for> the inspection process and afterward ? (b) Each emergency locator transmitter requiredby paragraph (a) of this section must be attached to the airplane insuch a manner that the probability of damage to the transmitter in theevent of crash impact is minimized. Fixed and deployable automatic typetransmitters must be attached to the airplane as far aft as practicable.(c) Batteries used in the emergency locator transmitters required byparagraphs (a) and (b) of this section must be replaced (or recharged,if the batteries are rechargeable) - (1) When the transmitter has beenin use for more than 1 cumulative hour; or (2) When 50 percent of theiruseful life (or, for rechargeable batteries, 50 percent of their usefullife of charge) has expired, as established by the transmittermanufacturer under its approval. The new expiration date for replacing(or recharging) the battery must be legibly marked on the outside of thetransmitter and entered in the aircraft maintenance record. Paragraph(c)(2) of this section does not apply to batteries (such aswater-activated batteries) that are essentially unaffected duringprobable storage intervals. (d) Each emergency locator transmitterrequired by paragraph (a) of this section must be inspected within 12calendar months after the last inspection for -- (1) Properinstallation; (2) Battery corrosion; (3) Operation of the controls andcrash sensor; and (4) The presence of a sufficient signal radiated fromits antenna. (e) Notwithstanding paragraph (a) of this section, a personmay -- (1) Ferry a newly acquired airplane from the place wherepossession of it was taken to a place where the emergency locatortransmitter is to be installed; and (2) Ferry an airplane with aninoperative emergency locator transmitter from a place where repairs orreplacements cannot be made to a place where they can be made. No personother than required crewmembers may be carried aboard an airplane beingferried under paragraph (e) of this section. (f) Paragraph (a) of thissection does not apply to - (1) Turbojet-powered aircraft; (2) Aircraftwhile engaged in scheduled flights by scheduled air carriers; (3)Aircraft while engaged in training operations conducted entirely withina 50-nautical mile radius of the airport from which such local flightoperations began; (4) Aircraft while engaged in flight operationsincident to design and testing; (5) New aircraft while engaged in flightoperations incident to their manufacture, preparation, and delivery; (6)Aircraft while engaged in flight operations incident to the aerialapplication of chemicals and other substances for agricultural purposes;(7) Aircraft certificated by the Administrator for research anddevelopment purposes; (8) Aircraft while used for showing compliancewith regulations, crew training, exhibition, air racing, or marketsurveys; (9) Aircraft equipped to carry not more than one person; and(10) An aircraft during any period for which the transmitter has beentemporarily removed for inspection, repair, modification, orreplacement, subject to the following: (i) No person may operate theaircraft unless the aircraft records contain an entry which includes thedate of initial removal, the make, model, serial number, and reason forremoving the transmitter, and a placard located in view of the pilot toshow "ELT not installed." (ii) No person may operate the aircraft morethan 90 days after the ELT is initially removed from the aircraft. Mike,I was lucky enough to have a friend that wasn't using one to loan it to me.Just had to buy a battery and make a holder. Hard to find a spot for itthough. Finally mounted it under the rear panel, with the antennae slightlybent held in place with two plastic hose/cable clamps. ELT in the hollowunder the panel on the left with ant. heading to the right. He did bring up that I did have it so I never got to the challenge of notneeding it till after phase l was complete. My feeling was that,,,if I will need one anyway, might as well get one now.People argue that it's mandatory only if you have a passenger in phase ll,But what if after I have 8 hours something quits and I land in the woods andbreak both my legs, or something else where I can't even crawl. Nice toknow that someone will be looking for you.walt----- Original Message -----

Subject: Pietenpol-List: ELT'sHi all,,My question is whether anybody is actually going to be listening when my 406 ELT ($$$$)goes off, and for that matter are "they" going to dispatch emergency rescuers to my crash scene, without somebody actually declaring thatI am missing? Somehow I don't put a lot of faith in "them". Dan HelsperPoplar Grove, IL.**************Gas prices getting you down? Search AOL Autos for fuel-efficient used cars. The 406 ELTs are received by satellite and there certainly people listeningall the time that will start the search/rescue process.I have done ship electronics for a long time and I sold many hundreds orthousands of 406 ELTs (called EPIRB in marine version) when the requirementsto carry them instead of the 121.5 units came out about 12 years ago. Wefirst started selling them at about $1,200 and the price steadily declinedover the years. I think they are about $600 now. The ship ones are muchbigger, designed to float, and have a hydrostatic release that releases themfrom the mount at a certain water depth so they float to the surface.I did talk to one of the manufacturers at Sun N Fun and asked if theythought the price would come down on the aviation units like they did on themarine ones. He said no, but that is the same story we got when the marineones were first being sold.Brian KrautEngineering Alternatives, Inc.www.engalt.com -----Original Message-----

I was working with EMS in Ottawa to certify a 406 ELT. The project wasshelved. But at the time they were targeting $800. I hear rumours in theavionics underground that someone else will be introducing a 406 in thatprice range soon. Wait and see. -----Original Message-----

"They" are the same people who were wondering why all that beeping was goingoff on 121.5 so the answer is that the response really couldn't get anyworse by moving to a more reliable system.Poplar Grove, eh?
