Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: HingesI used the larger extruded aluminum piano hinges (A/C Spruce catalog). Except for the expense, they seem fine...But I haven't launched yet. I like the idea of being able to remove the aileron by pulling the pin (all six feet of it), but I neglected to relieve the aileron spar ENOUGH to compensate for the thickness of the hinge, consequently, the trailing edge of the aileron is abouta quarter of an inch aft of the trailing edge of the wing....good luck...Carl Vought________________________________________________________________________________

I have a sketch that I can e-mail you direct that makes it self explainatory.Chuck GantzerStill working on the accident report. Yep, I spoke to him earlier... he said he was there. Anyone interested in his hinges, they are currently $70 for 9 hinges... 3 for eachelevator half and 3 for the rudder. My check is in the mail.--------Mark - working on wingsRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... __________

I don't know about B'head this year but a couple of years ago I bought a setof 9 CNC machined aluminum Pietenpol tail hinges (ready to bolt on andincluding the center pins) for $40 total from P.F. Beck who (I think) isbased out of North Carolina someplace. A recent post here listed hiscellphone as 803-259-6381. IIRC he and a buddy have access to CNC equipmentand aren't afraid to use it! Their hinges REALLY impressed me as highquality at an absurdly low price. I showed them to my CNC machinistco-workers at my then-employer (Steen Aero Lab) and they all guessed thehinges must have cost between $60 and $90 EACH... they all dang near blewhot coffee out their noses when I told them what I actually bought them for.VERY high quality stuff. Vi Kapler sells some cast hinges, I believe, I'mnot really familiar with them but I've been told that they take somefinishing work before use (could be wrong on that). I've heard very goodthings about both guys and their products so you probably won't go too farwrong either way. Hope this helps.-MikeMissin' Oshkosh, but at least I can watch/listen to it live online!Mike WhaleyMerlinFAC(at)cfl.rr.com----- Original Message -----

Subject: Pietenpol-List: HingesThe person you want to talk to that was with PF Beck at Brodhead was Don Harper.Cell # 1-803-671-2983..His hinges are machined from solid stock and very high quality. He also has a oil separator that is very niceat a good price. I bought a set of light weight disk brake calipers that PF says works great. e-mail address- _Don_Harper(at)markivauto.com_ (mailto:Don_Harper(at)markivauto.com) Ted Stonebldg corvair powered Piet**************An Excellent Credit Score is 750. Dave,Ted will know best, since he bought the calipers, but PF was saying that hemade his brakes from golf cart or go-kart brakes with discarded skill sawblades as the disc!! What a great idea!Gary BootheCool, Ca.PietenpolWW Corvair ConversionTail done, Fuselage on gear(13 ribs down.) _____

Oh yeah, it is definitely runny at or around 100F. I actually like it that way...it is think enough to apply a good layer, but I think the thinner mix probablyabsorbs into the wood a little better. All the joints I've made from 65Fto 100F seem to be fine. My main concern was the life span of the stuff as itsits out on my workbench in a 120F hangar. From what I read, it should be finefor quite a while.I was at the airport for a bit last night and the two compounds seemed to be justfine. Thin, but no visual change. Oh, as far as properly mixing equal mixes of runny epoxy... that is tough. I useJim Markle's mixing chart by weight... works great.--------Mark - working on wingsRead this topic online here:http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.p ... ______Date: Fri, 31 Jul 2009 10:30:34 -0700 (PDT)

Subject: Fwd: Pietenpol-List: HingesDave, Ihad bought a set of cart calipers earlier but not installed. After I saw those that Ron Harper was selling. liked much better so I bought them. These are mechanical calopers.as was my first set.I am using a single handle bar to brake both wheels. PF Beck's disk are made from 14 "masonarry blades that were to be trashed, that's what he told me.Ted StoneBldg corvair Piet____________________________________
