Pietenpol-List: Elevator Trim Tab

All my ribs are done and the spars will be put together in a week or two. I'll also be starting on the tail feathers. Has anybody incorporated an elevator trim tab? I think it would get really old having to constantly apply stick pressure like they did in the Great War.(The Fokkers I fly now do have an electric trim tab which is an improvement over the early D.VII models). I read of this a few years ago in an issue of the newsletter. This is way I did mine and it works very well and is not visibly noticable. This took two or three tries (can't remember) until I could fly hands off and lean back in the seat and begin to climb and lean forward in the seat and begin to desend. What a kick! I just simply adjusted the forward turnbuckles to bring the outboard section of the horzontal down (in my case because the plane nosed over some when I let go of the stick) a very small amount. This puts, in effect, some washout or twist in each side of the horizontal, but it is such a small amount it is not visibly noticable. The rear edge of the horizontal where the elevator hinge point is remains untouched (straight). Hope this is clear, because it is very easy to do and worked great! I read this in an old issue of the Buckeye Pietenpol Newsletter, but cannot remember which one. Nothing added to the airplane, just a tweak of what is already there. Subject: Pietenpol-List: Elevator Trim TabPieters,Am boxing in my starboard elevator, ala 7AC, for an adjustable trim tab. Has anyone seen or heard of this being done on a Piet? For you engineering types,How many sq in would it require to be effective? My design is 3 X 16. In addition I will feather all trailing edges with balsa for rudder and elevators. My I hear any objections or suggestions both positive and positive.Corky in La making airplane noises while Isabelle whistles Dixie________________________________________________________________________________

Subject: Re: Pietenpol-List: Elevator Trim TabWill be activated with a small lever in a quadrant on the right side, rear cockpit with bottom pivot. Control wire connected above pivot positioned as travel needed on trim arm. Forward Nose down etc.Activated cable is .051 wire in vinyl conduit. Hope you get this explanation. Most of the run will be outside of fuse under fabric. Seems simple enough. Felt strongly that a Piet needed a trim mechanism as the weights of different pilots, and a forward fuel tank will keep the pilot busy trimmimg. Also, when you chop throttle for landing it might be possible to throw that trim backand reduce the pressure on the stick like the old 7 AC did.Corky in La just before his afternoon nap________________________________________________________________________________

Subject: Pietenpol-List: Pietenpol for SaleFolks,I have been a follower of this list for 3-1/2 years while building my Pietenpol. It is now complete and the airworthiness inspection is done. Unfortunately, my flying partner and good friend in the project has lost his eyesightand this has pretty much taken a lot of the enjoyment out of the plane. Therefore, I am putting the plane up for sale. It is a long fuselage, 3 piece wing, Sitka spruce ship with a C-85. If interested, contact me and I cansend pictures or provide additional information.ThanksLou Wither________________________________________________________________________________Subject: RE: Pietenpol-List: Elevator Trim TabDate: Wed, 3 Aug 2005 14:00:40 -0500
