Subject: Pietenpol-List: I've been robbedThis is off topic, I know, but I just need to vent. This evening when I got home from work, I find out I've been Robbed !! That's never happened to me before. They cut the lock off my garage with boltcutters, and stole my brand new mig welder / argon tank, my Dad's old 1/2" Sioux drill, some other electric tools, Air conditioner unit removed and stashedbehind the garage - probably with intent on coming back to get it. I keep going outside with a flashlight & ball bat, to have a look around. I hope I canfind the s.o.b. before the police do. This really pisses me off more than youcan imagine !! There's nothing worse than a thief or a liar !! Police came over and gave me some suggestions, and will be watching the pawn shops. I'm going to go around to the pawn shops myself, and see if I can find anything. Also going to put up one of those motion detector lights on the back of the house. I don't know what else to do. Just thought I'd let ya all know that yesindeed, there are thieves out there !!Chuck G.NX770CG________________________________________________________________________________Date: Wed, 01 Mar 2006 08:19:44 -0500

Chuck:That is awful. It has happened to me as well. It makes you just ripp. That mig welder has an argon tank. It has a serial number. Whether you owned thetank or only rented it. Who ever uses it will have to refill it or exchangeit eventually. They will be caught. Just make sure that all local suppliers areaware of the theft. The retailer that you were purchasing your gas from shouldhave the number if you don't.Cameras and a big mean nasty dog may help but is only closing the barn door afterthe cows got away. Some of the old timers where I learned to fly had some problemsw/ kids messing w/ their planes at night. It was a rural field. They useto use a charged up coil rigged so that if you touched the strut you'd geta wallop. A motion detector w/ a siren hooked up may work to scare them.Michael SilviusScarborough, Maine ----- Original Message -----

Welcome to the club, Chuck. It's not very exclusive. When it happened to me, they stole a couple of shotguns and some money. However, the thieves also set fire to the house. The fire took a lot more stuffthan was stolen. My wife, two-month-old son and I came home late to a crowd of fire trucks and onlookers.I don't recommend this for a happy evening at home. The place was gutted but the arson investigator was able to find enough clues tosort out what happened. He said what others on this list have said: Thesekinds of burglaries are usually done by kids on meth and we were really luckythat we didn't catch the bastards in the act.Mike Hardaway ----- Original Message -----

Recommend a two part epoxy with min. 1 hr cure time cut with MEKto thin so you can spray. Epoxy will evaporate the MEK and then curewithout any leftover unreacted additives that will migrate out of the wood.Clean up your equipment with acetone. If using for exterior wood parts, goto industrial autopaint supply house and get a epoxy/acrylic system. Acrylics have better UV resist. Epoxy has better water/chemical (ie.AVgas) resist with better adhesion/penetration.Gordon BowenOriginal Message:-----------------

On the news yesterday morning here in Arkansas, a guy had been robbed and he rigged a 20 gauge with rock salt to the broken window the crook had previously came thru, got the SOB in the left armpit and landed the crook in the hospital and the victim in jail.I guess the lesson here would be to use buckshot next time!Ronnie----- Original Message -----

Not that many years ago, (well OK it was in the 60s) it wasn't unheard offor shop owners in Europe to rig "self-shooters" to protect their shops frombreak-in. It was simply accepted as a normal security system. Don'tunderstand why anyone breaking into your place should be entitled to do soin complete safety. Next we will be required to leave keys to our lock-upsin fear that the robber might hurt himself using a crow-bar.Bob-----Original Message-----

Hi Chuck:Sorry to hear about your misfortune. Don't waste your time at the pawn shops forat least 30 days. Thats how long they have to hold onto the stuff before theowner has abandoned it, maybe more. They know good and well it is hot, but withoutserial numbers and identification numbers, they can claim they didn't haveguilty knowledge and get by with it. Try flea markets first. Lots of peopletake stuff there. There used to be a pawn shop up in north topeka that specializedin tools if you are over that way sometime. A man crawled thru an unlocked window into our house about 6 yrs ago and stoleKarens wallet. Took the cash and her cell phone. He came back a week laterand tried again and she was up and caught him. He just calmly walked away. Copscaught him, but when they went to court and she showed up to identify him,his lawyer got a continuance. The next court appearance, they gave her 24 hrsnotice that she needed to show up or the case would be dismissed. She showed up.His lawyer asked for and got another continuance. They pulled the same thing,24 hrs notice, again she showed up. So the prosecutor asked for a continuancethis time. She got up and told the lawyers and the judge that she could getoff any time she wanted to and she would keep coming back! They didn't know whatto do.He finally pleaded guilty to something else and the dropped the chargeagainst him. They tried to steal her van a couple months ago, and bumped the horn, wakingthe dog who woke David. He ran outside toward them yelling bloody murder! Getaway from my van you f-----g n---r! The theif ran off and jumped into his buddyscar and they left. When the police finally showed up 45 minutes later, theylooked at the damage and said "Your insurance company can call us in three daysfor the report" I asked them if they were going to take finger prints or anythingand they said no, they don't do that. They just fill out police reports. If we don't want our cars stolen then move out of the city like everyone elsedoes!Dennis ----- Original Message -----

Man, that sucks. Some cretin(s) stole a custom IO-540 motor mount right off thefront of our Skybolt which was on display at Oshkosh last year. Even in the midstof the best group of folks in the world, at least one creep managed to sneakin and really dampen our mood. I figure that maybe he'll fly right into ahigh-tension line or something. Or better yet, maybe he'll blow himself up whileusing the welder he stole from your garage...-MikeMike Whaley merlin@ov-10bronco.netWebmaster, OV-10 Bronco Associationhttp://www.ov-10bronco.net/ ----- Original Message -----

Yes, Harvey is right. Per statute criminals cannot be harmed unless one can articulatethat they were afraid for his or her life or were placed in immediateapprehension of being harmed by an intruder through the eyes of a reasonableperson. (determined by courts) When you guys leave your shop for a prolonged period of time, call your localsheriff's dept. or police dept. and request to be placed on their extra patrollist. We do this frequently for our community so the thugs see squads thereat varying times of the day and night. Many burglars will strike in the middleof the day when we are at work. ( a good time to push record on that VCR) Burglars typically do not display violent violent behavior. They do not wantto be discovered and do not want to risk being identified. You'll fiind thatmost are cowards. The only time I've heard of a burglar becoming violentis when an attempt was made at trying to detain them. When a criminals flightor fight response kicks in, they will first attempt to flee. If he cannot, then he will fight. Intead of putting your family and friends in danger, a good camera, some steelreinforced windows on the shop, and an extra patrol request will do alotto deter these idiots. The police are already watching the pawn shops. They do need make, model, serail#, and proof of purchase to help them in recovering one's belongings. Sorry fior rambling. Just my two cents...Scott Robison EAA # 728071Police Officer / Fellow BuilderCentral Illinois________________________________________________________________________________Subject: Pietenpol-List: Re: wood preserver
