Pietenpol-List: Piets close formation

Don, that picture is definitely a keeper! The color and composition are great, but you're right... either the camera angle compressed the distance or Frank was flying some seriously tight formation with you!Oscar ZunigaSan Antonio, TXmailto: taildrags(at)hotmail.comwebsite at http://www.flysquirrel.net_________________________________________________________________Get a FREE small business Web site and more from Microsoft Office Live! ________________________________________________________________________________

Don,Great looking Piet and I really like what you did with the straight pipes and heat muff. Do you find you get enough heat to the carb without any air inlet holes in the muff or are there some and I just don't see them?ThanksGene>>>> -- > 9/26/2007 12:12 PM>> ________________________________________________________________________________

Dan and Ryan,Thanks for the info. With this muffler, in the condition it is in, I'm sure most everything would have to be replaced, all it would take is LOTS of money. It appears the muffler has been reworked several times and the last time they tried to braze it and brazing stainless steel just doesn't work. I really think it would cost as much to have it rebuilt as it would to buy new and besides, I really like the look of straight pipes on a Piet.If I don't have any luck with straight pipes or the Aeronca type exhaust I will call Dawley's and talk with them before I throw out the old muffler.ThanksGene------------------------------------------------------------------------------9/26/2007 12:12 PM________________________________________________________________________________

Has anyone don a long pipe down the side of the airplane, exhausting behindthe cockpit, like the Gipsy Moth or similar aircraft? -----Original Message-----

Steve,Thanks for the information and Photo's. If you find any sources for any of the items needed to make up the straight pipes and heat muff please let me know and I'll be sure to do the same. Having them ceramic coated sounds like a great idea. I'll look around to see if I can find somewhere to have them done (I live out in the boonies so will probably have to go to Nashville or Memphis to find someone to do them). I really like the looks of Don's heat muff. I don't have the skills needed to make it up but perhaps I can located someone that can build one. I'm really limited on time I can spend on the Piet so it may be a while before I complete the set up but when I do I'll send photo's.ThanksGene in Tennessee (finally getting some rain) > ________________________________________________________________________________Date: Thu, 27 Sep 2007 07:22:00 -0700 (PDT)

Hi Guys,A lot of the UK Piets use a =93Swiss Muffler=94. Check out HYPERLINK"http://www.piteraq.dk/flight/muffler.ht ... ffler.html for details. I believe the info comes from Tony Bingelis=92s book.Sound reduction is very good but looses a couple of hp.CheersPeterWonthaggi AustraliaHYPERLINK "http://www.cpc-world.com/"http://www.cpc-world.com _____

I am building a Pietenpol and I have cut two doors doors (7" deep and 12" wide) in the right-side front cockpit and rear cockpit. Before covering the side I put an extra longeron lap jointed at each vertical and angled stringer from the firewall back 8 feet to the bellcrank stringer. After covering the side with 1/4 inch plywood I then cut the doors out to the new longeron. I then reinforced the doors with fir and hinged them at the bottom. At the top edge I made a pin arrangement to lock the doors in place. Have I protected the truss integridy on this side? I am not an engineer and I just want to know if I did the right thing.
